DelcoGOP Standing Up for Taxpayers Against the Green Grab in November
Media, PA – Earlier this summer, Delaware County Council unanimously voted to put a $120 million bond question on the Nov. 3rd general election ballot for voters. The stated purpose of the referendum, according to the Council, is to help acquire additional green space in Delaware County over the next 10 years. Their math doesn’t add up.
Delaware County Council has grown the size of the County government by 25% over the past three years and it has already raised county property taxes by 47% to accommodate this spending binge over the same time. Now County Council wants voters to approve an additional $120 million for the Council to plug a massive hole in their budget, the final acquisition of the former Don Guanella property and its transformation into the “Delco Woods.” The details of the referendum question clearly state that this funding can be used for current capital projects, even members of Council agree with this assessment.
The result of this bond is clear, another tax increase for Delaware County voters, after three years of massive tax increases, the Council is adding another.
“Delaware County Council is trying to pull a fast one on residents,” Delco GOP Chairman Frank Agovino stated. “They’ve passed three crippling tax increases already and now they want to see if voters will vote to increase their own taxes for Council’s budgeting fiascos.”
“What Delco residents need to know is that another 25% tax increase is on the way, because Council’s previous budgetary failures are spilling over into this year as well. The only way they can get the nearly $80 million to pay for the Delco Woods property, the extra $27 million they owe the developer and the $50 million for the project itself, is if they can fool voters into increasing their own taxes. Our message is simple. Don’t be fooled. Vote NO to this tax increase.”
