The Rose Tree Park Hawkwatch finished it's Fall 2013 season yesterday! We tallied 6,426 hawks (and a few vultures) migrating over our site this fall.

Our Big Sit on Sunday, October 13, 2013, tallied 46 species. This was our lowest count since we started in 2006, but not bad given the very strong ENE winds--hard to hear the songbirds! Thanks to all who participated!

One of the many Broad-winged Hawks counted at Rose Tree Park Hawkwatch today. This one, an immature, was flying low first thing this morning.
Later in the day, we had many more, with a tally of 300 in the end!

A couple of the Rose Tree Park Hawkwatch counters and steering committee members attended the annual Kittatinny Roundtable today at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. This is an annual meeting that includes representatives from hawk watch sites around Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and one where lots of great information is exchanged, and ideas about population trends are discussed.

We have had some bang up buteo days at Rose Tree Park in the recent days!
On Sunday, we smashed our single day record for Red-shouldereds, with 63 counted! Our previous record for RSHA seen in a single day was 20!

Despite the pre-hurricane conditions yesterday, Sunday the 28th of October, 30 Red-shouldered Hawks were recorded migrating over Rose Tree Park, from 12:30-3:30pm, by counter Chris Pugliese! Conditions were: 100% cloud cover, with intermittent drizzle, and NE winds estimated in between 15-20mph at times.
