Every August, the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee hosts to encourage families, communities, and organizations to come together for action and conversations about how we can build a stronger support network for breastfeeding parents! 💖

This year’s theme is RISE, which stands for: Resilience, Interdependence, Self-determination, and Empowerment! 🐦‍🔥This year's theme was created by USBC to capture the heart and strength of the field while also honoring the change and growth that are still needed to further equitable access to breastfeeding support for all families.

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! This is a global campaign observed annually from August 1-7 to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding. The week advocates for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life to ensure lifelong health, development, and environmental sustainability. Our breastfeeding support team includes our breastfeeding coordinator who is an IBCLC, and two CLCs that are breastfeeding peers. A peer is a mother in your community who has personal experience breastfeeding her own children and is specially trained by WIC to help other mothers. With their practical experience, they’re able to provide mother-to-mother encouragement, guidance, and real-world advice. We are here to help you with your breastfeeding journey!

Medina County WIC celebrates breastfeeding all year but we’re excited to share that August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month dedicated to protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding as the best source of nutrition for babies. The Ohio Department of Health, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, breastfeeding for two years or longer as mutually desired by mother and child. Reach out to WIC with any breastfeeding questions or concerns. We are always here to support breastfeeding.

At WIC, we know that screen time and digital devices are a big concern for families. 👪 The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently updated its recommended guidelines on digital media to prevent potentially harmful effects on your family's health, safety, and well-being! 📱The AAP suggests several recommendations to support your family’s healthy use of technology:

✅Create a family technology plan and set boundaries on digital media.
✅Delay use of personal tablets.
✅Watch and play alongside your children to monitor digital content.
✅Use parental controls.

Check out the full article from the AAP, which provides even more recommendations and resources, such as a “Phone Ready questionnaire” and sample conversation starters about media: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/helping-kids-thrive-in-a-digital-world-AAP-policy-explained.aspx

June brings summer’s sweetest chapter: strawberry season! 🍓Strawberries are the WIC-approved food of the month!

Strawberries are filled with antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin C, which helps support your immune system! These berries can also improve both heart health and blood sugar, making them a great healthy snack. 🫶 Strawberries are also super versatile—try including them in smoothies, salads, desserts, or homemade jams!
