The Medina Community Citizens Police Academy, a partnership of Medina City, Montville and Medina Township Police Departments, is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Fall 2026 Session! The 16th Session of the Medina Community Citizens Police Academy will be 12 weeks in length and held every Wednesday night from 6:30-9:30 pm. Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026, and conclude on December 9th, 2026.

The Citizens Police Academy provides the opportunity for the public to get an in-depth view of police work, though it is not intended to train individuals to become a police officer. Some topics to be covered include Use of Force, Community Orientated Policing, Accident Investigation, OVI Detection and Enforcement, Police K9’s, Judicial Processes and Court, Police Drones, and Decision-Making scenarios.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and will be subject to a background check. The Citizens Police Academy is completely free; however, we do ask that all applicants that register commit to attending all weeks of the Academy. Medina County residents will be given first priority in filling this upcoming class. Tonight, we had the privilege of celebrating Officer Daryn Winebrenner as he concludes an incredible career with the City of Medina, retiring just shy of 32 years of dedicated service to our community.

Throughout his career, Daryn has worn many hats. He served as a Field Training Officer, active shooter instructor, detective, TASER instructor, mentor, and trusted teammate. No matter the assignment, he approached every role with professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to serving the citizens of Medina.

More than his accomplishments, Daryn will be remembered for the respect he earned from his fellow officers and the positive impact he had on those who had the opportunity to work alongside him. His experience, leadership, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

This evening, family, friends, current officers, and retired members of the department gathered to recognize Daryn's outstanding career with a plaque, cake, and plenty of stories and laughter.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Daryn Winebrenner on his retirement and thanking him for nearly 32 years of faithful service to the City of Medina. We wish him and his family nothing but happiness, good health, and many adventures in this next chapter.

This friendly pup was found on Oak Street and is currently safe.

Unfortunately, the dog is not wearing any tags and does not have a microchip, so we’re hoping our community can help reunite it with its owner.

📢 Community Notice: Police Training at Northrop Elementary

On Wednesday, July 22, from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., several law enforcement officers, including K-9 teams, will be conducting training exercises at Northrop Elementary School.

This training is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring our officers are prepared to respond effectively to emergency situations and to enhance the safety of our community.

During this time, residents may notice an increased police presence at the school, including police vehicles, officers, and police dogs. Signs will be posted around the building indicating that a training exercise is in progress.

Please note: This is a planned training event and not an actual emergency. There is no cause for concern if you see law enforcement activity at the school during these hours.

# # Technology Helps Locate Endangered Missing Adult # #

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, at approximately 3:12 p.m., the Medina Police Department received a report of a missing 75-year-old Medina resident. The woman had left home around 9:00 a.m. to attend a local event but did not return. Family members later spoke with her by telephone and reported that she appeared confused and was unable to provide her location.

Officers immediately began working to locate the woman and her vehicle. A search of the Flock Safety license plate reader network showed that her vehicle had been detected near Interstate 71 in Hamilton County at approximately 2:24 p.m. This information confirmed that she had traveled far outside the expected area and provided officers with a critical starting point for the search.

Based on the woman’s age, reported cognitive condition, and apparent disorientation, she was entered into law enforcement databases as a missing and endangered person. A statewide Missing Adult Alert was also issued.

Medina officers obtained emergency location information from the woman’s cellular telephone and continued tracking her general direction of travel. As the location information updated, officers contacted law enforcement agencies along her route.

A deputy with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office subsequently located the woman at a rest area along Interstate 71. She was safely taken into protective care and voluntarily transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Her family was notified, and her vehicle was secured.

“This incident demonstrates exactly why we invested in Flock camera technology,” said Medina Police Chief Ed Kinney. “The camera network provided a verified vehicle location several counties away and gave our officers a critical lead when time mattered. That information, combined with emergency cellular location data and excellent coordination among dispatchers and law enforcement agencies, helped bring a very concerning situation to a safe conclusion.”

The Medina Police Department thanks the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the other agencies that assisted during the search. This incident is another example of how responsible use of technology, sound police work, and cooperation among law enforcement agencies can help protect vulnerable members of the community.
