INCIDENT: Vehicle Crash – Traffic Homicide Investigation
DATE OF UPDATE: August 27, 2026

ARREST UPDATE
Following an extensive traffic homicide investigation into the fatal crash on October 29, 2025, investigators established probable cause for the arrest of Jason Alexander Kerr, 05/11/2007, a Melbourne, FL resident.

On August 27, 2026, Kerr was taken into custody and charged with:
Vehicular Homicide
Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death

Kerr has been booked into the Brevard County Jail.

🚔 MPD Chaplain Program | Continuing to Learn & Serve 🙏

Members of the Melbourne Police Department Chaplain Program recently attended the Florida Sheriffs Association Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Training Expo in St. Augustine. They participated in valuable training sessions covering topics such as the role of a chaplain, stress management for law enforcement, crisis response, and intervention.

The expo also provided a wonderful opportunity to connect, share experiences, and fellowship with chaplains from across Florida. We couldn’t be more proud of our Chaplain Team for their commitment to continued learning and to supporting the men and women of the Melbourne Police Department. 💙👮‍♂️👮‍♀️

The Melbourne Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit conducted Operation "Back to School". This detail ran both the morning and afternoon school zones on school days between Monday, August 10th through Friday, August 21st.

The air temperature may be 90°, but pavement can exceed 140°.
Before walking your dog, place the back of your hand on the pavement for several seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

Have questions about Anchorage Limitation Areas and what they mean for our community? Join us for a community Town Hall on Wednesday, August 19, from 6:00–7:30 PM at the Melbourne Police Department, 250 W. NASA Boulevard.

We’ll discuss why these areas are established, anchoring and mooring restrictions, and enforcement of applicable laws.
