Algae Bloom Report for the week of June 01, 2026. The Central-North IRL (C-NIRL), Central Banana River Lagoon (C-BRL), Southern Banana River Lagoon (S-BRL), Southern-North IRL (S-NIRL), and Northern-Central IRL (N-CIRL) ended the week within low-bloom conditions. The Southern Mosquito Lagoon (SML), Northern-North IRL (N-NIRL), and Northern Banana River Lagoon (N-BRL) ended the week within mid-bloom conditions.

The estimated algae concentrations in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) decreased in the C-NIRL, S-BRL, and N-CIRL and increased in the SML, N-NIRL, N-BRL, C-BRL, and S-NIRL.

Blooms are classified as Harmful Algal Blooms when chlorophyll-A concentrations reach high-bloom conditions above 80 µg/L and are persistent for a week or more. Fluctuations below that level and duration are not unusual in the Indian River Lagoon. Visit https://conta.cc/4e1fDDC for the detailed report

Pause the Fertilizer to Protect the Lagoon.

Today marks the start of the Summer Fertilizer Blackout Period in the Indian River Lagoon watershed. From June 1 to September 30, nitrogen-containing fertilizer is prohibited from being applied to lawns and landscaping.

During Florida’s rainy season, fertilizer can quickly wash off lawns and into storm drains or be pushed past a lawn's root zone and into groundwater that flows directly to our waterways. Taking a break from fertilizing during the next four months helps reduce nutrient pollution and supports cleaner water, healthier seagrass, and a stronger Lagoon ecosystem.

The good news? Your lawn usually doesn’t need fertilizer this time of year thanks to regular rains.

Small actions at home can make a big difference for the Indian River Lagoon. Stopping pollution at the source also makes SOIRL's large-scale pollution-reduction projects work more efficiently. Working together, we can get to a healthier Lagoon faster. 🌿💧

If you live along a stormwater pond or canal and choose to fertilize, remember to leave a buffer of at least 10 feet where no fertilizer is applied. This reduces fertilizer runoff into the water, thus cutting off food for harmful algae blooms.

Adding a low-maintenance buffer, where you mow less frequently, or a planted buffer that includes a mix of bunch grasses, groundcover, and woody shrubs can further help our waterways by pulling excess nutrient pollution from the groundwater and preventing muck-forming grass clippings from entering the water.

Even if you don't live along the water, buffer zones can be beneficial along hard-surfaced areas like roads, driveways, and sidewalks. They help to reduce runoff pollution from yards. Not only do they help the water quality of the lagoon, but they also provide habitats for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.
