Our business offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, for Labor Day.

Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday in September, was created by the labor movement and is dedicated to recognizing American workers and their achievements. It is an annual national tribute to the contributions workers make to our country’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Because many workers receive a well-deserved day off, Labor Day weekend is traditionally considered the last big weekend of summer. It’s a great time for one last trip to the lake or river, another backyard barbecue, or a final campout before the season changes.

If you plan to travel during the holiday weekend, please remember to follow all traffic laws, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and remain alert and mindful of your surroundings.

If you participate in water activities such as swimming, boating, or floating, please wear a properly fitted life jacket and follow all boating and water-safety laws. Swim with a buddy, keep a close eye on children around the water, and never operate a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

UPDATE
The burn ban remains in effect for ALL of Izard.

NEW INFORMATION
As of 10:50 today (9/3/26), County Judge, Eric Smith has declared Izard County as a DISASTER. The declaration was considered after looking at the extreme dry and drought conditions that threaten life and property as well as the effects to agriculture.

During the month of August, dispatch received 430 calls for service. Deputies completed 75 incident reports and 20 motor vehicle accident reports. 8 new felony cases were filed with the Izard County Circuit Clerks office. Deputies also served 51 civil papers. Jail staff booked a total of 47 inmates with a daily average of 36 inmates. $10,949.82 worth of restitution for victims, fines, and fees were collected by the Office Administration.

IZARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
INCARCERATION REPORT
August 31st, 2026

According to Sheriff Charley Melton, the following individuals were incarcerated last week. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Billy Plunkett, 52 of Mount Pleasant, was arrested on August 24th for probation violations.

Bryce Byler, 22 of Horseshoe Bend, was arrested on August 25th for driving on a suspended driver's license, false imprisonment, domestic battery 3rd degree, and terroristic threatening 2nd degree.

Kaleb Welch, 32 of Mountain Home, was arrested on August 26th on a warrant out of the Izard County Circuit Court for probation violations.

Jensen Rivera, 24 of Horseshoe Bend, was arrested on August 26th on a warrant out of the Izard County District Court for failure to appear as well as failure to register a vehicle and no proof of insurance. Rivera also had a warrant for failure to appear out of the Fulton County District Court.

Kevin Burton, 47 of Franklin, was arrested on August 29th for fictitious vehicle license, no vehicle registration, no proof of insurance, driving on a suspended driver's license, tampering with an interlock device, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and DWI 2nd offense.

Kurtis Hofmann, 34 of Sidney, was arrested on August 30th for assault on a family or household member 3rd degree.

According to Sheriff Charley Melton, the following individuals were incarcerated last week. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Samuel Copes, 23 of Oxford, was arrested on August 19th for disorderly conduct.

Michelle Foshee, 50 of Violet Hill, was arrested on August 20th for a warrant out of the Izard County District Court for failure to appear and a warrant out of the Izard County Circuit Court for three counts of delivery of a controlled substance.

Stephen Curtis, 22 of Horseshoe Bend, was arrested on August 22nd for domestic battery 3rd degree.

Joshua Maccart, 41 of Melbourne, was arrested on August 23rd for two counts of third degree assault on a family or household member and disorderly conduct.

James Farris, 55 of Horseshoe Bend, was arrested on August 23rd for disorderly conduct, criminal mischief 1st degree, obstructing governmental operations, and resisting arrest.

SCAMMERS ARE VERY ACTIVE

Over the past several days, we have received several calls from citizens reporting attempts by scammers to take their hard-earned money. While the scams may be presented in different ways, many of them are the same scams that have been circulating for a long time.

Scammers may pose as law enforcement officers, government officials, businesses, financial institutions, family members, or other trusted individuals. They often use threats, pressure, or a sense of urgency to convince you to send money or provide personal and financial information.

Remember: Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. Don't let them rush you.

We encourage everyone to:
• Never send money to someone who unexpectedly contacts you demanding payment.
• Never give out your Social Security number, bank information, passwords, or other personal information to an unsolicited caller.
• Be suspicious of anyone demanding payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or other unusual payment methods.
• Do not trust caller ID. Scammers can make a phone number appear to be a legitimate local or government number.
• If someone claims to be a law enforcement officer and demands immediate payment to avoid arrest, hang up and contact the agency directly using a trusted phone number.
• Talk to a family member, friend, or someone you trust before sending money or making a financial decision.

Law enforcement agencies will not call you and demand that you pay money over the phone to avoid arrest or resolve a warrant.

Scammers are also very active on the internet and social media.

Be cautious when receiving unexpected messages, friend requests, advertisements, emails, or offers that seem too good to be true. Scammers may create fake profiles using someone else's name and photos, pretend to be a friend or family member, offer fake jobs or investments, sell nonexistent items, or send links designed to steal your passwords and financial information.
Do not click on suspicious links, send money to someone you have only met online, or provide personal information simply because someone appears legitimate.

If you receive a message from someone you know asking for money or financial assistance, contact that person directly using a phone number you already have rather than responding to the message.

If something doesn't feel right, it probably deserves a second look. Take a moment, slow down, and verify who you are actually dealing with before giving anyone your money or personal information.

Don't let a scammer take what you have worked hard to earn.
