This morning the training division from National Grid Electric was at Fire Department Headquarters to train Melrose Firefighters how to manage electrical emergencies.
Firefighters often respond to downed wire calls including power lines, and other utility lines during inclement weather events, motor vehicle accidents, fallen trees or limbs, and other emergencies such as fires or construction accidents. The main role of the fire service at these incidents is to secure the area and keep citizens out of the danger zone until the power company arrives to shut down the power and make repairs.
The linemen covered important topics such as identifying different primary and secondary lines, re-closer operations, fuse cut-outs, the proper operation of Non-Contact Voltage Testers, and other methods of safely operating around electrical hazards.
