This video has been making its way around social media this week. While you watch it, please pay attention to:

- How quickly the fire grows.
- How long before the fire is discovered.
- Did you hear a smoke alarm ?
- How much smoke fills the room.
- Did family members know how to use the fire extinguisher?

Please remember that working smoke alarms provide early notification of a fire and gives you more time to escape. Working fire extinguishers are a great tool, if you know how to use them. Fires grow very quickly, don’t hesitate, exit the home or building as quickly as possible. It sounds like this fire was the result of a candle being too close to combustibles. Keep open flames and other heat sources away from combustibles. Test your smoke alarms!!

The Sgt. Michael Chesna ”thin blue line” flag began its tour around the Commonwealth on Weymouth Firefighters Engine 3 this morning. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing pictures of this flag at fire departments throughout the Commonwealth to show our continued support of the Chesna family and all other families that have lost police officers in the line of duty. At the culmination of its journey, the flag will return to Weymouth where we will present it to Cindy Chesna and her children.

Finally, the nicer weather has arrived and summer is lurking around the corner. We are all going to be spending much more time in our backyards than we usually do as a result of recent events and the Fire Department would like to address one elephant in the room. Fire Pits and Open Flames are NOT Permitted in the City of Melrose.

The City and its density does not allow for the clearance needed to have an open fire with respect to combustible structures which include, in addition to your home, sheds, fences and other structures. MGL gives us clear authority to extinguish backyard fires (and issue citations) IF we are summoned to investigate.

WE DO NOT PATROL the City looking to SPOIL YOUR FUN!! On the contrary, we are all human beings too and we've all been through a stressful 2+ months with our own families as well as looking out and taking care of all of you (A Job we all Love btw). If you were to ask any of us, there's nothing more most of us would enjoy than a warm summer New England evening, cold beer in our hands, good friends and plenty of laughs but in Melrose unfortunately, no Fire Pits. The Law is the Law and it's pretty clear and it was written way before a pandemic and folks questioning constitutional rights, it was written for everyone's safety.

If we are summoned to your Property than a neighbor most likely was concerned....

- PLEASE DO NOT GIVE US A HARD TIME!!!
- PLEASE GET ALONG WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS!!

Thank you all, Be safe!!!

On November 20th, My Aunt Maria Vickers was hit by a vehicle whom the driver stated he was a firefighter as you can see after hitting my Aunt in the crosswalk he got out of his car with an apparant limp asked if she was ok of course she said no as you can hear the sound of the impact. She told him to call the police shortly after he pulls over up a little ways he drove off before police came. If you know this individual he fled the scene. I will be posting this on various city FD departments around the Malden Area
