CASA volunteer, Shernita Brown, came by today to pick up backpacks donated by Kappa Alpha Theta Memphis Alumnae Chapter. Shernita is already a superhero. She’s a Shelby County Government 911 dispatcher! And her brother, Shelby County Sheriff's Officer Hulon, is working at Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County today and was happy to es**rt her up to CASA office to pick up the backpacks. The Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Memphis Alumnae Chapter purchased new backpacks and school supplies for all of the children we serve with CASA!! We are so grateful. Our volunteers are already showing up to get backpacks and take them to the children we serve. Not only is this so useful, it also helps our volunteers to show practical ways in which these children are cared for. Thank you!!

We want to share that Katie Graffam will be leaving her role with Juvenile Court and CASA. Katie has accepted a position teaching high school geometry at her children’s school, St. George’s —so if anyone suddenly starts hearing about angles, proofs, or why triangles are actually “fun,” you’ll know who to blame. In all seriousness, this move will allow her to be more present with her family during these last few years before her kids graduate, and bring a little more alignment (and sanity!) to their family schedule—something we can all appreciate.

While we are truly excited for Katie, she will be greatly missed here. She has brought heart, humor, and a whole lot of dedication to CASA and to the families we serve. Katie shows up fully—for her colleagues, for the children, and for this work—and her impact on this team and our community is lasting. And while we’re gaining a geometry teacher, we’re losing our unofficial private detective—no one quite digs into the details (or finds the missing pieces) like Katie.

Katie has shared how much this work and this team has meant to her, and we know the feeling is mutual. We are so grateful for everything she has given during her time here. We are planning to post the position. It will likely be a full-time position.

Please join me in wishing Katie all the best in this next chapter. We have no doubt she’ll make a difference in the classroom—though something tells me CASA will always have a very passionate unofficial ambassador in her.

Well deserved!! Congratulations!

🚨 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Kids need self-care days, too! 🚨

Yes, even the tiny humans who leave socks everywhere, ask “why?” 47 times a day, and somehow get tired while playing deserve a day to hit the reset button. 😆

Self-care can be as simple as:
☀️ Sleeping in a little
🍿 Having a favorite snack
🎨 Making a mess with a craft
🐶 Cuddling a pet
💙 Spending time with someone who makes them smile

A happy heart needs care — at every age. 💕

So… what’s on your kiddo’s perfect self-care day checklist?

☀️ Summer’s winding down… did you finish your checklist? 👀

✔️ Popsicles eaten
✔️ Pool days logged
✔️ Staying up way too late

…aaaand maybe one more? 💙

✔️ Learn what a CASA volunteer does
✔️ Sign up for training
✔️ Do something that lasts longer than summer

No pressure… but this might be your favorite thing you check off all year 😊

That’s the power of CASA.

This , we’re calling on our community to step up for children in foster care. Your voice matters more than you know.

This is an excellent resource that prevents children from entering foster care or helps them exit foster care more quickly. This enables children to live with family and heal from trauma.

For nearly 25 years, the Center on Developmental Disabilities has helped children in in Shelby County by providing support to families in which a relative is caring for a child when the child’s parent is unable to do so.

Thanks to $5.1 million in new state funding, the Shelby County Relative Caregiver Program will keep doing that work for five more years, supporting grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives raising children when parents can't.
