Alpha Omega Veterans Services (AOVS) provides disabled, displaced & homeless veterans with supportive housing and all services needed to totally reintegrate back into society; with a success rate of 90%. AOVS was the first organization of its kind in Memphis and for 36 years has served nearly 15,000 with housing, information & referrals, meals, food & homeless outreach.
Alpha Omega was establi
shed in 1987 by a mother of two sons who, after serving in Vietnam War, returned home suffering from what we now know as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). After searching unsuccessfully for an agency to provide treatment for her sons, she opened what was to become one of the first facilities in the United States to offer supportive services to displaced and disabled veterans. After the first year, the duplex unit housed eight additional veterans. This humble beginning has developed into a modern, progressive five facility agency offering a myriad of services to those who fought for the very freedoms we enjoy today. Our services are designed to meet their physical, social and psychological needs, to promote their health, security, happiness and usefulness in society.
Our services include, but are not limited to providing housing, food, clothing, transportation, referrals for education, individual & group counseling, training and job placement for our clients as long as needed. We also provide referrals and advocacy for any veteran in need, whether they are a part of our housing program or not. We provide rehabilitative services and access to those services necessary for our clients to totally reintegrate back into society. The majority of our staff consists of veterans, former clients or both.
At full capacity, we serve over 74 veterans at our six housing facilities located in Memphis, TN; which include transitional supportive housing at Madison & Vinton. Our permanent supportive housing locations are located at Court Avenue and Ball Road Depot location has our Townhouses & SRO facilities. In addition to housing our Madison facility also provides a Drop-in Center, which provides meals to anyone who is hungry and offers showers, phone calls, bus tokens and referrals to all veterans in need.
Our Urban Farm & Garden, located at our Ball Road facility provides fresh food and improves the quality of life for our clients by utilizing therapeutic gardening, farm-to-table cooking courses, nutrition & environmental education classes, volunteer and employment opportunities, as well.
Our newest addition, opening on November 10, 2023 is a 22,000 square foot building that will serve as our administrative headquarters & house our veterans in a campus style facility that will not only be new housing, but enhanced transitional supportive services for our veterans. The facility will also offer services for our permanently housed veterans, such as an exercise room, music room, library, gymnasium, hobby shop & full service PC Lab.
