CASA volunteer, Shernita Brown, came by today to pick up backpacks donated by Kappa Alpha Theta Memphis Alumnae Chapter. Shernita is already a superhero. She’s a Shelby County Government 911 dispatcher! And her brother, Shelby County Sheriff's Officer Hulon, is working at Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County today and was happy to es**rt her up to CASA office to pick up the backpacks. “I’m proud of myself for doing what other people didn’t think I could do... and for doing what I didn’t think I could do.”

Those are Pierre’s words.

They’re also a reminder of what’s possible when young people are given accountability, opportunity, and the right support.

At Juvenile Court, we believe rehabilitation isn’t just an idea. It’s a young person returning to school. A first job. A restored relationship with family. Finding hope again.

Through partnerships like Youth Advocate Programs (YAP), we’re helping connect young people with the mentorship, resources, and support they need to build a different future while remaining connected to their families and community.

Pierre’s story is proof that a young person’s circumstances do not have to define where their story ends.

Children now become adults later. The work we do today shapes what comes next.

School attendance matters, and so does making sure families have the support they need to get their children to school every day. ❤️

Today, our Child Welfare team is at the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Back-to-School Event sharing why consistent attendance is important and connecting families with resources that can help address barriers before they become bigger challenges.

Hope becomes powerful when it’s matched with opportunity. ❤️

Today at the National Civil Rights Museum, Juvenile Court celebrated young people who are choosing a different path, families who never gave up, and a community that continues to believe in the power of rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation isn’t just an idea. It’s a young person returning to school. A first job. A restored relationship with family. Finding hope again.

At Juvenile Court, we believe accountability and opportunity go hand in hand. Through partnerships like Youth Advocate Programs (YAP), young people receive the mentorship, guidance, and support they need to build brighter futures while staying connected to their families and community.

We are especially grateful for our Youth Development Specialists, whose compassion, commitment, and tireless work help youth and families navigate challenges long after a court hearing has ended. Their dedication is changing lives every day, and today’s celebration was a reflection of that impact.

Every success story we heard today reminds us that when courts, families, community partners, and caring adults work together, transformation is possible.

Children now, adults later. The work we do today shapes what comes next.

The future of Memphis is shaped by how we support children and families today.

Nearly 80% of the work happening inside Juvenile Court is child welfare, and we know lasting change doesn't happen alone. It happens through strong partnerships.

If your organization provides services that strengthen children and families, we invite you to join our growing network of Child Welfare Partners. Together, we can connect families to the resources they need before challenges become deeper barriers.

Applications are open through July 31st.

Join the work. Help strengthen Memphis.

She has competed on the world's biggest stage.

Now, she's choosing to stand in the corner of children who need someone just as committed.

Meet Jessica Ramsey, an Olympian, Team USA athlete, and now a CASA volunteer serving children in foster care through Juvenile Court.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, are trained volunteers appointed by the Court to advocate for the best interests of children in foster care, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs remain at the center of every decision.

While she's training with her sights set on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Jessica has also committed to something just as meaningful: advocating for children during one of the most challenging times in their lives.

Her story is a reminder that making a difference doesn't always begin with a title. It begins with a decision to show up.

This is Part 1 of Jessica's story.

Next, you'll hear how her journey as an Olympian has shaped the discipline, resilience, and perspective she now brings to serving children in our community.

Because every child deserves someone in their corner.

A father’s presence can shape a child’s confidence, character, and future.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, coaches, uncles, and father figures who lead by example and show up when it matters most.

At Juvenile Court, we see every day the difference that engaged fathers and positive role models can make in the lives of children and families. We are grateful for the men within our organization and throughout Memphis and Shelby County who continue to guide, support, and inspire the next generation.

Happy Father’s Day from the Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County.

Today, Judge Tarik B. Sugarmon joined the South Memphis Alliance for its National Foster Care Awareness Month Community Fair, where community members, service providers, and advocates came together to support children and families across Memphis and Shelby County.

At Juvenile Court, we know that children thrive when they are surrounded by caring adults, strong support systems, and a community willing to invest in their future. That is why we continue to strengthen partnerships, expand resources, and create opportunities for more voices to advocate for youth in foster care.

One way you can make a difference is by joining our Foster Care Review Board. Volunteers work alongside Court staff, attorneys, and child welfare professionals to help ensure the needs of children in foster care remain at the center of important decisions.

It takes a village to support the next generation.

What role will you play?
