We certainly are quite proud to occasionally have the opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of our colleagues when they achieve certain heights and carry out great things here. This week, we'll feature a couple of our firefighters who have made the whole department shine brightly through their dedication, intelligence and authentic desire to serve the citizenry of Shelby County, Tennessee.

We'll begin with Jessica Curran who tirelessly demonstrates her deep love of this industry as a whole through her devotion to fire and life safety. Jessica currently serves as Engine Company Lieutenant on Fire Squad Seven in Northaven. She is also a Paramedic who has been helping patients at that level since 2006! And in addition to all of that, she also serves our neighboring Collierville Fire Department in a particularly significant communications role that is quite close to her heart.

We must not forget that she is also a wonderful Mom too!

Today, a “Moving Honors“ procession was held by Hospital Wing and AirEvac Lifeteam at the Millington-Memphis Airport in recognition and in memory of - gallant EMS Heroes who gave their lives while carrying out their noble medical missions. A brief moment everyone, please.

Fire Departments everywhere are so often thought of for handling emergencies that require the stalwart bravery and skill to mount attacks upon violent and sometimes deadly, viscous fires.

In truth, every fire department that I have ever studied is far more apt to be dispatched to you for a medical emergency than anything else.

It is in this light that we pause to reflect on those incredible individuals who devote their intense, arduous training to simply… SAVE LIVES.

Sadly, sometimes they sacrifice theirs in the process. This is for them. Give thanks and appreciation please.

They are all truly here for us and the common good.

Follow-up from yesterday’s post: for the last 2 days Recruit class 88 conducted various skills training at the Memphis Fire Department’s training academy.

Just to name a few, The 88s worked tirelessly on search and rescue tactics, forcible entry, knot tying, and ladder raises! This was a great opportunity to come together and learn valuable skills that are pertinent to being a firefighter.

A special thank you to the crews of Engine 60-B, Engine 65-C, Unit 67-B&C, 601, and B22 for your help and guidance. Last but most definitely not least, much deserved appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Memphis Fire Department for taking the time out of their busy schedule by providing a great training experience with unwavering support.

We look forward to working together again in the near future!

The product is moving along well. Recruit Class #88-051826 put in plenty of work this week! From grueling PT sessions, countless turnout drills, fire extinguisher training, tool identification, and interesting and intense lectures, the dedication by these young souls are not going unchecked!

Shelby County, in ten more weeks, you will gain some of the hardest-working dedicated young men and women that's ready to serve our county!

The Shelby County Fire Department has an unusual request for landowners in un-incorporated Shelby County, Tennessee. We currently have a class of new fire recruits who will soon need to demonstrate their new skills in a state-required live burn.

Some of the best training they can get comes from the occasional ability to utilize an old residential home that perhaps someone had been planning to remove or tear down. If you live in one of these shaded areas and have such a house that you plan to take down, consider allowing our training division to help our new recruits by burning it down.
