Just after the lunchtime hour Wednesday, Aug 26th at Walnut Grove & Bazeberry, the SCFD dispatched a serious Motor Vehicle Crash with reports of a truck in the water, on its side with entrapment. Responding companies included Engine 65, Fire Squad 1, Tower 62, Unit 65, Battalions 21 and 24 with associated Chiefs, and EMS Leaders and providers.
The patient was extricated with cutters and spreaders and then flown to Regional One Trauma Center aboard the Hospital Wing. He's expected to recover.
It's always very interesting to see the level of intense focus displayed by everyone from the Dispatch Office, the Sheriff's Office, Firefighters and EMS Professionals all coming together to help people in need. Great job everyone... It's what we do!

We have another opportunity to share our pride in two more esteemed colleagues who have worked so very hard to complete their training to become Fire Fighting Paramedics! Kenneth Moment and Joshua Sims have been immersed in their quests to achieve the medical level of Paramedic at Southwest Community College for over a year - and they did it while on the job.

This is no small feat and the command staff here at headquarters as well as our crews throughout our engine companies in unison applaud this high achievement. Moment has recently passed the National Registry and Sims is preparing to take his.

Bravo and Very Well Done Gentlemen. So glad to have you in our ranks. Congratulations!

It is with profound sadness that we pass on the news of the passing of one of our beloved brother fire fighters SCFD Driver Jimmy Parks who recently answered his final bell on August 3rd. Jimmy was 78.

Our hearts are with his entire family especially his wife Pat and son Chad. Known to be a deeply Christian man he left a wonderful legacy of skill and tradition along with many memories that rose up among those who began calling each other this morning as the news spread throughout our engine companies.
Among them was from his second cousin - Driver Joey Palugi, a current Driver within our ranks here at Shelby County.

This prompted calls to Mike Lackey, Paul Terrell and Chief Molder all who remembered the day that Jimmy climbed all the way to the very top of the huge MLG&W water tower behind the 10s to mount an antenna up there with Paul Terrell, Michaels Molder, Danny Wilson and Mike Hopkins. A giant effort really - considering that it was for our very first radios in this department.

Jimmy came on in 1975 in what has been remembered as probably the 4th class of recruits in this foundling fire department. He was a key figure in many of the initial phases of this agency and contributed every day to a department that regards him as a man who knew how to be one of the finest fire fighters anywhere. He will be missed greatly.

God Bless You Jimmy. Thanks for the camaraderie Sir.

The CAF AirPower History Tour featuring one of the rarest World War II bombers, the B-29 Superfortress "Fifi" is coming to the Millington-Memphis Airport in August!

We've seen a bit of a surge in the number of home fires over the past few days. This one was yesterday the 3rd of August in the early afternoon and received a full assignment of equipment and personnel. We are grateful to the Collierville Fire Department for helping out with the arrival of an aerial and Battalion Chief from their department. It's always terrific to have such good help like we have seen from our neighboring agencies.

Shelby County Fire had three engine companies on the scene with ambulances and Commanders as well as the Collierville apparatus. The fire was fought for just under an hour and the cause remains under investigation. There were no injuries although as you can see the damage is extensive.

Folks the take-away here is the obvious and potentially harmful or perhaps DEADLY way that this car was parked perfectly blocking the hydrant. We are left wondering what is on the mind of someone who would do this. Yes, a fire could be considered a "low probability" event . . . . . WITH HIGH CONSEQUENSES !

If your car blocks a hydrant when a fire department needs it, they need it right now. Establishing a viable water supply is among the very first things that occurs as engine companies arrive at a fire call. All I can say is that great restraint was shown by these firefighters and this person is fortunate that the windows are still in this car and the five-inch hose isn't flowing 1,500 gallons per minute through the front seats! What a careless thing to do.

We are grateful to all of the more than two dozen firefighters on this scene who overcame heat and hurdles to knock this fire down. We're proud to be you colleagues.
