Today is World Refugee Day!

Today, we celebrate the courage it takes to start over.
The parents who have sacrificed everything to keep their children safe.
The students learning a new language.
The families rebuilding after loss.
The individuals who continue to move forward with hope, even when the road ahead is uncertain.

Throughout this month, we have shared stories of perseverance, friendship, generosity, belonging, and resilience. Stories that remind us that refugees are not defined by what they have fled, but by the strength, talents, and contributions they bring to our communities.

To every refugee and immigrant in Memphis: thank you for your courage, your determination, and the ways you enrich our city every day.

We honor your journey, celebrate your achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to building a community where everyone can belong.

The work of pursuing freedom, justice, love and peace is an ongoing work

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and read General Order 3, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Granger’s announcement took place 2.5 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the South — 89 years after the Declaration of Independence declared that all men are created equal.

The gap between the promise of the Declaration of Independence and the proclamation on June 19, 1865 is a reminder that there is often a gap between the promise of justice and its reality.

161 years later we celebrate General Granger’s Juneteenth Proclamation, knowing that there is still work to do. There is still inequity and injustice in our world today and the work of seeking justice and loving our neighbors is still ours to do.
