Proud of our Mena and Polk County volunteer firefighters for completing advanced bus‑incident training today. These men and women continue to sharpen their skills so they’re ready for any emergency—big or small.

Their dedication keeps our community safe. Thank you for showing up, learning, and leading.

This morning at approximately 5:00 AM, the Acorn Fire Department was paged out to a hay barn fire on Polk Road 70.
Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved barn with heavy fire conditions and exposure risk to the nearby wooded area.
The Arkansas Forest Service was requested to respond with a dozer, allowing a fire line to be cut around the structure to protect the timber and prevent further spread.
The homeowner suffered a significant loss, with an estimated 80 to 100 round bales of hay destroyed. For our local farmers, hay is hard work, fuel costs, equipment wear, and a season's worth of effort. Anyone who has ever baled hay knows it is neither easy nor cheap.
Let's keep this family, and all our local farmers, in our prayers as they recover from this loss. Our community stands with them.

Acorn Fire Department was paged out for a grass fire near Aubrey D. Tapley Park.
On arrival, crews found that a squirrel had gotten into the powerline, causing sparks and igniting nearby grass.
Mena Fire Department responded for mutual support, assisting with containment and ensuring the area was safe.
We appreciate their teamwork and quick response.

Even though we’ve gotten some rain, the burn ban is still in effect.
Conditions are still too dry for safe burning, and we want everyone to stay safe.

Please hold off on any outdoor burning until the ban is lifted.
