Village of Menands The purpose of our page is to share Village news, events, and photos. Not long after arriving, he met and married Adelaide Jackson of Albany in 1840. Here, Mr.

The Village of Menands was incorporated after a special election held on August 15th, 1924, when residents voted to encompass the old boundaries of the 15th school district of the Town of Colonie. The Village of Menands takes its name from Louis Menand, a prominent 19th-century Horticulturist, born in France on August 2nd, 1807, and immigrated to America in 1837. In 1842 they settled in (what is n

ow) the Village that bears his name. Menand created one of the finest horticultural and garden establishments in the area at the time. His home and greenhouses were located on the north side of Menand Road at what is now the site of the Village’s Ganser-Smith Memorial Park. In the mid-1850s, the first railroad was built north, out of Albany; it was called the “Albany Northern”, and adjoined the eastern boundary of Mr. Menand’s greenhouses and gardens where the trains would stop. Eventually, a large railroad station was built and the stop was simply called “Menand's” and the area soon associated itself with the name. All,

Here are some updates on what will occur where, considering the immediate shutdown of 250 Broadway.

The Village of Menands and the Menands School / School District have a reciprocal emergency plan agreement. Therefore, I implemented that plan, and the school will be the designated location for all official meetings. This will also include upcoming elections (both primary and regular).

The Menands Seniors have several options and are evaluating them all. I have arranged access for them at Mohawk Hudson's Humane Society Community Room and Watervliet's Senior Center next to the library, and Seniors President Diane Leonard has arranged access at both Sacred Heart Church in North Albany and Colonie Crossings.

Over the last few days, we have been looking at the air quality at the Menands Police Department. Out of an abundance of caution, I implemented an emergency plan with them. They will operate management functions from temporary spaces at 150 Broadway. We are also looking into a rental trailer to process arrests on-site.

Fire Department operations have begun transitioning to Schuyler Heights as a "work from" location. I am extremely proud to say our crew responded yesterday to their first call since the fire using a truck loaned to us by Shaker Road FD, which is currently stationed at the Menands DPW. Menands Fire will respond from both locations depending on the emergency. Chief Ognan anticipates that we will likely operate Schuyler Heights equipment before the weekend and offers several options to continue serving the community.

This will be a long process. Some things are easier than others. We are on a good path, and I trust the team we've assembled to get us back better than ever.

Official Statement from the Village of Menands, Menands Fire Department and Menands Police Department

"Today, the Village of Menands faces a moment unlike any in our community’s history. Yesterday’s fire within our own firehouse marks one of the most difficult and heartbreaking days our Village has ever experienced. A building that has long stood as a symbol of protection, service, and community was itself impacted by the very emergency our members dedicate their lives to fighting.

We are incredibly grateful that no emergency personnel suffered serious injury during this incident. The swift and professional actions of the responding agencies helped prevent an even greater tragedy, and for that we are deeply thankful.

The Village of Menands extends its sincere appreciation to the responding agencies that assisted during this incident, including the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department, Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department, Maplewood Fire Department, West Albany Fire Department, Latham Fire Department, and Boght Fire Department, along with the many additional mutual aid partners, EMS agencies, dispatchers, and public works personnel who responded with professionalism, courage, and compassion during this challenging event. We are also grateful for the overwhelming support shown by residents, neighboring communities, and fellow first responders throughout the Capital Region.

We would also like to thank the Town of Colonie Department of Fire and Emergency Services and New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control for their assistance with the ongoing investigation into this incident. The investigation remains active at this time, and additional information will be released when appropriate.

At this time, the Menands Fire Department is working closely with the Schuyler Heights Fire District to continue operations out of their station utilizing their apparatus. In addition, the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department has provided an engine that will operate out of the Village DPW garage to help ensure a quicker local response for our residents during this transition period.

For over 100 years, the Menands Fire Department has stood ready to answer every call for help without hesitation. While this incident has deeply impacted our members and community, it will not define us. The strength of Menands has always been found in its people — in neighbors helping neighbors, in volunteers stepping forward, and in a community that stands united during difficult times.

As the investigation and recovery process continues, we ask for patience and understanding while our agencies work together to move forward safely and responsibly. Emergency services within the Village of Menands remain fully operational, and residents should continue to call 911 in the event of any emergency. The Menands Police Department will continue to operate as normal out of 250 Broadway while recovery efforts continue.

Together, we will recover. Together, we will rebuild. And together, we will continue serving our community with the pride and dedication that has defined Menands for generations.

A message from Mayor Brian Marsh:

"Dear Resident,

As we look ahead to the 2026-2027 fiscal year, I want to speak candidly about the financial challenges facing the Village of Menands and the difficult decisions required to adopt this year's budget. You will see 2 one-time charges as well as a tax rate increase on this year's Village of Menands tax bill.

Like many municipalities, Menands is experiencing significant financial pressure driven by rising costs, longstanding structural imbalances, and obligations that cannot be deferred. For too long, the Village operated without a fully balanced budget, relying on short-term solutions that, over time, compounded into larger challenges.

This year, we made the deliberate decision to confront those issues swiftly and decisively.

The adopted 2026-2027 fiscal plan includes a sizable tax increase. I understand that this is not easy, and I do not take lightly the impact it will have on our residents. However, this decision was made with a clear priority in mind: preserving ALL the services that our community relies on every day. Public safety, infrastructure, and essential municipal operations will remain ENTIRELY intact because of this approach.

Maintaining these services was critically important to me as your mayor. Reducing them would have had a direct and immediate impact on the quality of life in our Village. That would not have been acceptable.

At the same time, this budget represents a turning point. It is the first fully balanced budget the Village of Menands has adopted in more than two decades. By clearly aligning our revenues with our expenses and addressing long-standing financial obligations before they become emergencies, we are placing the Village on a more stable and sustainable path forward, especially considering recent inflationary pressures. We are taking advantage of EVERY grant opportunity. We are planning for large capital items, retaining quality employees - who are the backbone of our municipal operations, and growing our economic engine, the Broadway corridor, while still maintaining the Urban Suburban feel that makes Menands the #3 most desirable place to live in our Capital Region.

This was not an easy process, and there were no perfect options. But I firmly believe that the choices made in this budget put Menands in a stronger position-not just for today, but for the many years ahead.

I thank you for your understanding, your engagement, and your continued commitment to our Village of Menands community. If you have any questions, please email me or stop by the Village office."

Sincerely,
Brian A. Marsh, Mayor

📢 A message from Mayor Brian Marsh:

“I want to clearly state the purpose of Monday's Special Meeting.

We have been evaluating the financial feasibility of allowing 2 of our police department staff to retire early. THIS IS NOT FORCED.
We asked well in advance of starting this investigation if they would be interested. Why would we suggest this? Their 2 contributions to the NYS Tier 2 NYSLRS program are quite large (more than TWICE the average officer's contribution).

Additionally, given the current Village of Menands' financial position, the Board of Trustees and I believe we should explore making the Menands Police Department more efficient. That is what we are considering. How can we become financially and operationally more efficient, all the while protecting DAY TO DAY operations?

To consider this option, we must get legislation through the NYS process. Senate and Assembly. That session ends on June 10th. To allow us this option, they must consider this legislation by then. That is the reason for the special meeting, to give them enough time to consider our bill, and give us a financial option to consider.

The posts and statements that this is committing Menands to doing this or that are WRONG. Incorrect, and frankly, misguided.

At a later date, the Board of Trustees will (if this legislation is approved and not vetoed) consider whether this is the right financial option for us.

We must consider all our options. This special meeting, agreeing to allow our legislative representative to give us another financial option to help our financial situation, is all this does. It's a procedural step in government.”
