Fall is here in Wisconsin, and before the freezing temperatures arrive, there are a few important things homeowners should check around their homes.
A little preventative maintenance now can help reduce the risk of water intrusion, foundation problems, and costly repairs when winter weather sets in.
Here are a few things to add to your fall checklist:
1. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts
Remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow near your foundation and contribute to ice buildup during winter.
2. Check Your Sump Pump Discharge Line
Make sure the discharge line is clear of leaves, dirt, and other obstructions. As temperatures drop, keep an eye on the discharge area for ice buildup. A frozen or blocked line can prevent your sump pump from moving water away from your home.
3. Check the Grading Around Your Foundation
The ground surrounding your home should slope away from the foundation. Low spots can collect melting snow and rainwater, increasing the chance of water finding its way into your basement.
4. Inspect Foundation Cracks
Take a walk around your home and look for new or widening cracks in foundation walls. Water entering these cracks can freeze and expand, potentially making existing problems worse.
5. Check Your Driveway, Sidewalks, and Concrete
Uneven or sunken concrete can collect water that freezes and creates slippery conditions. Cracks can also allow moisture to enter, contributing to deterioration during freeze-thaw cycles.
6. Test Your Sump Pump and Battery Backup
Don't wait until the spring thaw to find out your sump pump isn't working. Test the system now, and if you have a battery backup, make sure it's operating properly.
Wisconsin winters can be tough on our homes. Taking a little time this fall to inspect these areas can make a big difference when the snow starts flying.
