What Is an Epitaph?
An epitaph is a deliberately chosen inscription placed on a tombstone, marker, or memorial. It is not merely decorative language. It serves as a permanent public statement about identity, memory, faith, values, or legacy.
In cemetery practice, the epitaph is one of the most meaningful design decisions a family makes.
Within Mendenhall Cemetery, many headstones bear epitaphs that capture the character and legacy of those laid to rest there. One of the most fitting belongs to Coach Tommy Lucas, a highly accomplished football coach in Mississippi and Alabama and a member of the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame. Generations of players remember his steady refrain on the practice field, “Run it again,” words that now stand as a simple and powerful tribute etched in stone.
