Charlotte M. Hoak Pygmy Forest

Charlotte M. Hoak Pygmy Forest The Charlotte M. Hoak Pygmy Forest is a 5 acre lot which was donated to Van Damme State Park in 1969 by the California Garden Clubs, Inc.

This is a virtually unknown 5 acre parcel of soil depleted, acidic and well studied Pygmy Forest on the Mendocino Coast of Northern California. The trees are stunted and under 20 feet tall, yet over 100 years old. The Forest is made up of 2 types of pine trees, Cypress, Rhododendron, Huckleberry and rare lichen. It's easy to feel like a giant in this terrain.

Fort Bragg is a place to forget about the stress of every day life. It's a place to relax, unwind, and listen to the sound of the waves, fall asleep to the sound of the foghorn, feel the salty ocean air breeze by, and most importantly make memories that will last a lifetime.

It has many names. Its common names include false hellebore, false skunk cabbage and corn lily, but these tell us more about what it is not rather than what it is.
