John, Cynthia, Brent, Cara:

We want to sincerely congratulate you for your collective win yesterday. All contests be they sports or politics have the tendency at times to be thorny. But in the end as Americans we have always learned to work together for the common good. We pledge to support your efforts. We may not always agree. But the fact is it is through the exchange of opposing viewpoints that the best decisions are made. As President Kennedy said: "Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future." We pledge to work with you as called upon. Good luck!

When I was in the 3rd grade, we held a mock election using a facsimile ballot for an upcoming election. I was surprised to learn that my dad was on the ballot. After the election, my dad told me that during the final weeks of the campaign, he received information about his opponent that would have destroyed the man’s reputation. He did nothing with the information (which incidentally, was true). When I asked why he said:” Some things are more important than winning an election. I refused to be the one to destroy this man’s reputation.” It was a powerful lesson.

Recently the Mendon Democratic Committee received an anonymous letter with no return address that was undeniably a threat. Our slate of candidates discussed how to proceed. We chose to do nothing. The threat was based on one thing – our party designation. I am saddened that politics has become so tribal. I wish our local elections could be non-partisan. My entire voting life I have voted a split ticket. Every candidate in this election, regardless of the letter behind their name, is trying their best to be good parents, grandparents, and citizens. Each has donated their time and talents to a variety of organizations that have improved our community and world.

No party has a monopoly on good ideas. The best government is balanced government. Jeff Kline, Jeff Clark, and I will make sure that our town committees include a diversity of politics and viewpoints. We will never act in our own self-interest or for political advantage. We will be completely transparent. This election comes down to years of observation. I’ve seen my running mates in the trenches. I’ve seen them under pressure. They are completely selfless, do not seek recognition or reward, and are the epitome of servant leaders. Selfless service when nobody is looking defines a person. This team will do what they have done for decades, place service above self.

We ask for your support.

I’m running for a seat on the Mendon Town Board. My desire to do so came about as a result of my three-year experience as deputy town attorney. My contact with both those who served, and those in need of service, increased my affection for this community and desire to contribute to its vitality. I am not an experienced politician, and frankly have some misgivings about the process. In my opinion, greater emphasis is placed on ideology rather than on critical thinking, leaving the electorate with little more than slogans, more emotional than analytical, to guide their decision making. I believe the candidates with whom I am running share this desire to place ideas above platitudes, with a “best idea wins” strategy, regardless of where the idea generates. I wouldn’t share this experience with anyone who didn’t put people above party. That is who you have, I believe, in Jeff Klein, Dave Cook, Jon Stern and Terry Daniele. I am not running against Cynthia Carroll and Brent Rosiek. I know Brent and consider him a friend. His work on the planning board has been, in my judgment, excellent. I don’t know Cynthia, but I’m sure she is a fine person. I’m running for the principle that this town needs a forum of inclusion, depth and diversity to become its best self. It is to that principle that I am committed. -Jeff Clark

The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a non-partisan organization dedicated to encouraging informed and active participation by the public in government, by increasing understanding of issues and candidates. All candidates for local office are invited to answer questions that the LWV posts. Here is the link https://www.vote411.org/

For decades the LWV has sponsored candidate forums to educate the public on the positions of their local candidates. We have learned that the forum for the Mendon candidates has been canceled because none of the Republican candidates responded to the invitation.

Political debates are a long and cherished tradition in American society. Their purpose is to facilitate the exchange of ideas directly between two candidates. No party or candidate has a monopoly on truth or wisdom. All of us should be interested in character, civil dialogue, and the exchange of ideas to help us make informed choices. Debates have played an essential role in providing voters an opportunity to see the character, temperament, and unscripted approaches of candidates seeking to lead our community.

Is a candidate or slate of candidates that will not complete a survey by a non-partisan organization or engage in a public debate truly committed to transparency and open communication with the citizens of the community they seek to lead? The silence indicates a resounding NO!
