The good news is the legislature has outlawed crypto ATMs. The bad news is fraudsters have already started to pivot.

We have had three recent reports of fraudsters calling people and using various tactics, getting them to withdraw large amounts of cash and turn it over to a courier service. One common theme is they persuade the victim to stay on the phone with them through the entire transaction. We will be reaching out to area banks to ask for a policy change where their employees do not interact with customers on the phone.

Please tell your family members, especially those who think the music is too loud and would like you off their lawn, about this scam.

Not the best way to start the weekend, but impressed and proud of the patrons and staff of the Copperfield for quick thinking and keeping one another safe!

At 1:18 today a car left the roadway and hit the side of the Copperfield Restaurant. Injuries were reduced thanks to the quick thinking of patrons and staff who shouted a warning and moved quickly to contact emergency services.

The adult male driver is currently in a holding cell at the Mendota Heights Police Department for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Lt. Tyler Uthe, a respected leader, a dedicated servant and friend. His loss is being felt deeply across our agency and by all who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

Our thoughts are with Tyler’s family, friends, loved ones and fellow troopers during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy as they grieve.

As we mourn Tyler’s loss, we are reminded that even those who spend their lives helping others sometimes need help themselves. No one should have to carry life's challenges alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline for support.

Tyler’s impact on this agency and the lives he touched will not be forgotten.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out for the Council meeting last night. A full house meant that more people got to hear a message about safe firearm storage and the proposed new police department/city hall.

I think everyone is rightfully concerned about the potential price tag for the police department/city hall build. When people get involved and come out in person to see the needs and the proposals to address those needs, they appear to be much more empowered and their understanding grows.

We have put out information about the project several different ways (social media, print media, television, mailers/news letters to homes, paper handouts during city events like trick or teeing, Nite to Unite, and Touch a Truck, we have had stand alone events like the kick off, open house, and ice cream social) but we are always looking for more ways to get the word out. One resident suggested we do a youtube video and I will get to work on that.

I also think that face-to-face communication is helpful, so in addition to our open office hour on the first council meeting of the month, anyone can email or call me and I will be happy to meeting and tour of the current facility. If you really want to help, you could hold a neighborhood meeting and staff/elected officials will come out and talk to your group.

And please share this post to neighborhood or community pages. I do not post information of city importance on pages not governed by the MN Data Practices Act....but you can.

Keep an eye out for what I am sure will be a professional looking and not at all trainwreck of a video that I create.

It is an absolutely gorgeous day, and the air is just right for civic engagement!*

We have a City Council meeting tonight at 6:00 PM that will include presentations on two very important topics:

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month in the City of Mendota Heights. We will be providing a brief overview of our 2020 Project.

We will also be providing an update on the getting a new police department and city hall and council will be discussing next steps.

Exciting times in the Heights.

See you tonight,

Chief

*bonus points if you can name the movie.

Our ultimate goal is to prevent crime, but when we fail to prevent it, we will work hard to solve it and hold people accountable.

Last year, three homes in Mendota Heights, as well as homes in other suburbs, were the target of a coordinated burglary ring. Our Investigations division, particularly Crime Analyst Shayna Hoechst, got to work with our local, state, and federal partners, identified the members of the group and linked them to more than a dozen completed and attempted residential burglaries in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida with a loss of over one million dollars.

On May 12th, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin announced a federal grand jury has indicted four men in connection with the burglaries.

Thank you to the Milwaukee Homeland Security Task Force 414, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office, Mequon Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Department, Orono Police Department, Edina Police Department, Plantation Florida Police Department, and the North Central High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, for working together to get these guys behind bars!

The crime analyst position is new to the Mendota Heights Police Department and it is paying off in spades.
