We have a really outstanding program coming up in just a couple of weeks. On Thursday, June 25th we will be hosting a talk by Curt Johnson on the history of gun making in Illinois. Curt has a life-long interest in American Long Rifles, in particular those made right here in our state. If you have a passion for local history this is something you are not going to want to miss.

Tickets are $10.00 each and can be purchased by clicking on the link below or by emailing us at [email protected] or by calling 815.539.3373

What a crazy hunting accident. I'm curious how it would have happened, other than just accidentally pulling the trigger while walking with the gun pointed down. But if, like this poor gentleman, you are also interested in fi****ms, then head over to our website to find more information and purchase a ticket to our Illinois Gunmakers talk on June 25th at 6pm!

What a crazy stroke of bad luck. I'd definitely say this one hundred year old article would be newsworthy even today.

Well, another Wild Bill Days is in the books. This past weekend was truly outstanding and we are so happy that we could share the story of LaSalle Co.'s own Wild Bill Hickok with everyone who joined us in all three locations over the two days. A big thanks to Walt Willey who was brilliant as ever and to the folks atLaSalle County Historical Society Museum. And of course, a big thanks to all of our volunteers here in Mendota who made the program such a success!

Hi all! As it is now June we have our next flag out at 909 Washington. This month we are flying the Continental Union Flag.

The Continental Union Flag

Also know as the Grand Union Flag, the Cambridge Flag, or the
American Flag, this design is the first in our series that starts
pointing to what will eventually become the Stars and Stripes.
This flag, created in late 1775 by act of the Continental
Congress, filled the need for a separate American flag. By the
end of the first year of the Revolutionary War, it became clear to
the emergent U.S. government that a flag, distinct from the
various British banners then common in the colonies, would be
needed for their new army and navy. While not a national flag
per se, being adopted several months prior to the formal
declaration of independence, this was the first flag to serve as a
banner of the thirteen colonies united in resistance to British
rule. However, despite its role as a proto-national flag, the
Continental Union Flag owes much to British design. The flag is
based on the red ensign flag changing only the solid red field of
the British flag and replacing it with the red stripes representing
the thirteen colonies while retaining the British union flag in the
canton. It is also likely that this design took inspiration from the
Liberty Stripes used by the Sons of Liberty from a decade or so
prior.
