The nation’s first county-level Early Childhood Climate Action Plan is here! Developed by Build Up in collaboration with multi-sector partners and shaped by input from over 150 contributors, this groundbreaking plan centers young children and those who care for them—focusing on climate-resilient facilities, safer infrastructure, and protecting early learning spaces from extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and other threats.

Explore the plan, the Build Up climate resource library, and early initiatives like the tree planting partnership with Canopy.

Community Equity Collaborative is honored to have served as a consulting partner on this project over the past year and to be part of such a powerful, cross-sector effort.

Community Tree Planting: Bringing Shade to Child Care Centers

Good news! We’ve just added a third preschool—Creative Montessori—to our tree planting event on Saturday, May 17, 2025!

Join us in bringing shade, beauty, and the power of trees to three early learning centers: Izzi EPA, Izzi Magnolia, and Creative Montessori. Together, we’ll support the health, development, and well-being of the young children, families, and educators at these sites. This early childhood tree planting pilot is funded by Measure K and launched in partnership with Build Up San Mateo County to shine a light on the importance of climate resilience in child care settings.

On May 1 & 2, Community Equity Collaborative was proud to offer scholarships to four remarkable young leaders to attend this year’s Reframe Festival—a live public media experience where pioneering thought met discerning journalism. Held in San Francisco, Reframe brought together changemakers, artists, and the hosts of PBS NewsHour for powerful conversations, timely discussions, and moving performances. From tech journalist Kara Swisher to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, AI visionary Fei-Fei Li (Co-Director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute), and Robb Willer (Director of Stanford’s Polarization and Social Change Lab), the event challenged us to consider new viewpoints, respond to accelerating change, and reimagine the common good.

Thanks to a partnership with KQED, Thrive Alliance, and Stanford, we were honored to sponsor Hannah Bensen and Hina Suzuki (Stanford Graduate School of Journalism, MA ‘25), Skye Hathaway (Anthropology master’s student and Thrive Policy & Advocacy Intern), and John Harrington (AmeriCorps VISTA with Stanford’s Haas Center and Thrive Alliance partner).

We were also joined by members of the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women, including youth commissioner Joy Zou, who participated in the opening night event.

A heartfelt thank you to PBS NewsHour hosts Geoff Bennett, Judy Woodruff, and Lisa Desjardins for generously offering their time and attention to these young leaders. Their warmth, brilliance, and encouragement exemplify the very best of public media.
