It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that we announce Deputy Ryan Proxmire has succumb to his injuries. Please keep Dep. Proxmire, his family and his law enforcement family in your thoughts as we begin to grieve this tragic loss.

KCSO will continue to update the community as soon as we know more details. Sheriff Fuller will be holding a press conference tomorrow afternoon. The time is still to be announced.

Thank you everyone for the support that has been coming into the Sheriff’s Office for Ryan, his family and our deputies.

On 08/03/2021, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Detectives on the Menominee County/City Wide Drug Team arrested a 33 year old Menominee man for delivery of methamphetamine. He was lodged at the Menominee County Jail. Menominee County was assisted by Marinette County Sheriff’s Office Detectives from the Northeast Tri-County Drug Enforcement Group.

Sheriff Mike Holmes encourages anyone with information regarding the illegal sale/distribution of narcotics to contact the Sheriff’s Office and request to speak with a Detective at 906-863-4441

USH 41/Hall Ave Railroad Crossing to be Repaired - Interstate Bridge will be CLOSED 8/9/21 thru 8/13/21:

CN is announcing plans to repair the USH 41/Hall Ave railroad crossing in Marinette, WI.

Beginning Monday, August 9, 2021, CN is performing a full renewal of the crossing on USH41/Hall Ave. In order to perform the work, it will be necessary to close the highway at the crossing. USH 41/Hall Ave will be closed at the railroad tracks and a signed detour will be in effect.

In addition, the Interstate Bridge will be CLOSED beginning Monday, August 9, 2021 and is expected to reopen by the end of the day Friday, August 13, 2021.

All northbound USH 41 traffic will be routed to Hattie Street Bridge and East on 10th Avenue. All southbound USH 41 traffic will be detoured West on 10th Avenue to Hattie Street Bridge.

The Sheriffs of Michigan mourn the loss of Sheriff Brian McLean.

Sheriff McLean was a great Sheriff, a good man and above all a friend to everyone.

Thank you Sheriff McLean for your service to the citizens of Houghton County for over 40 years.

Obituary for Sheriff McLean

Brian J. “Slim” McLean, 63, well-known resident of Houghton and longtime Sheriff of Houghton County, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at UP Health System- Marquette with his family by his side.
He was born on January 23, 1958, in Hancock, a son of the late John and Catherine (McCarthy) McLean. Brian was raised in Houghton and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1976. Slim began working at a young age, starting with Weber’s Sporting goods, the Pic and Lode Theaters and the Tee P*e Restaurant. After High School, he worked for the City of Houghton Public Works Department until beginning a career in Law enforcement. In 1978, he began working for the City of Houghton Police Department. In 1982, he became a deputy for the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department.
In 1996, Mr. Brian McLean became the Sheriff for Houghton County and to this date was the longest-running Sheriff of Houghton County With 26 years served to Houghton County.
On August 29, 1981, Brian was united in marriage to the former Kelly Smith. The couple resided in Chassell and Houghton while raising their family.
Mr. McLean was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houghton. Mr. McLean was very active in the community over the years serving on many committees and boards. He was also active with the Michigan High School Athletic Association being a referee for over 30 years. Slim had many hobbies and interests such as coaching women’s hockey with the Houghton Angels in the early 70’s and his daughter with the K-Wings in the 00’s. He played Monday and Thursday Hockey 60 and over rentals along with playing in the Calumet Hockey League, he was an avid golfer playing the Portage Lake Golf League. Slim enjoyed sharing with family and friends his love for cooking and baking. His loaves of bread brought comfort to people during their times of joy and sorrow. He was very active with the Knights of the Round Table. His warm smile and belly laugh would welcome all.
Brian was always very proud and happy with all of the relationships he gained while being the Sheriff of Houghton County. The Highlight of Sheriff Brian McLean’s career was serving in 2009 as President of the Michigan Sheriff’s Association. He was involved with all aspects with the Michigan Sheriff’s Association during his 26 years as Sheriff.
Preceding him in death were his son Alex; his parents; and his sister: Kathy.

A memorial service for Slim will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the Michigan Tech Campus with Rev. Glenn Schwanke to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton at a later date.
Visitation will be from 10am until 2pm at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

We have started hydrant testing again. We are currently working between 18th Ave and 38th Ave. We will be going around flow testing the hydrants and maintaining the caps so that we can open them when we need to. If you see us in your area please run cold water for about 5-10 minutes in order to flush out any sediment that may have come loose while we opened the hydrant.
