A Message from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
@missingkids

“With school back in session, experts are warning parents to educate their children about personal safety, especially while they’re traveling to and from school. That’s when attempted abductions of children are most likely to happen by a non-relative or stranger, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).” The center “says on its website that school-age children are at the greatest risk of an attempted abduction on school days compared to weekend days. According to the center, attempted abductions of school-age children were most likely to happen before school (7 a.m. – 9 a.m.), right after school (3 p.m. – 4 p.m.) and after dinner (6 p.m. – 7 p.m.).”

NCMEC ( www.missingkids.org ) provides safety and prevention resources for families and child-serving professionals focusing on the topics of online and real-world safety, including skills on how to handle a variety of situations ranging from staying home alone to knowing what to do in case of an emergency, to abduction and child sexual exploitation prevention.

Rodney Lee Frye, Jr., 27, of Wilson, Michigan, was sentenced on March 15, 2021, to 47 months to 7 ½ years following the entry of a plea to the following charges: 1 count of Fleeing & Eluding a Police Officer, 3rd Degree (punishable by up to 5 years); 1 count of Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer causing Injury (punishable by up to 4 years); 4 counts of Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer (punishable by up to 2 years). Frye was sentenced as a 3rd Habitual Offender, subjecting him to a sentence twice the maximum sentence.

On January 14, 2020, Escanaba Department of Public Safety was patrolling in the City of Escanaba when he ran the license plate of a black minivan and found the vehicle had no insurance. The officer also recognized the male driver as Rodney Frye, Jr. and knew that Frye had an extraditable felony warrant out of the State of Wisconsin. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Frye’s vehicle, but the Frye did not stop and instead fled the officer. The officer pursued Frye, who reached speeds of 85 MPH in the city of Escanaba. Michigan State Police deployed stop sticks, and successfully deflated the front driver’s side tire. Frye continued to drive, eventually going down a two track road. Officers from Escanaba Public Safety, Delta County Sheriff's Office, MI, and Menominee County Sheriff's Office continued to purse Frye.

When Frye started to slow, officers got out on foot to pursue Frye. Frye’s vehicle eventually got stuck in the snow on the two track road. Frye still refused to exit the vehicle, and continued to attempt to jar the vehicle loose. Officers broke out the back window and sprayed Frye with OC Spray. Officers broke out the drivers and passenger window and attempted to taser Frye. Frye was finally removed from the vehicle, and continued to resist the officers, refusing to give his hands to officers. During the course of the events, an Escanaba Public Safety Officers cut his hand while breaking out the driver’s side window.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted in this incident by Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and Menominee County Sheriff’s Office.
