PRESS RELEASE - FIRE FATALITY REPORTED IN STEPHENSON

STEPHENSON, MI – Sheriff Darrin Kudwa reports that human remains have been recovered in a Stephenson home following an early-morning structure fire that occurred on Wednesday, April 29th.

Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters were alerted to the blaze on Robert Street at 4:00 AM on Wednesday morning. While no occupants of the home were located during firefighting efforts, one resident – a 38-year-old Stephenson man – remained unaccounted for.

With the help of a Michigan State Police Fire Investigator and Canine Team, remains of the deceased were located in the debris today. Additional details will be released pending positive identification and notification to family members.

The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by personnel from the Michigan State Police, Stephenson Fire Department, Mellen Township Fire Department, Mid-County Rescue Squad, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Special Deputies, the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Menominee County 911.

This incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information related to this fatality is encouraged to contact the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office at (906) 863-4441. Information may also be reported anonymously via the Crime Stoppers of Marinette and Menominee County page, or through the Crime Stoppers mobile tip app.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Road Patrol Deputy position. Applications will be accepted until April 29, 2026.

Deputies within our Road Patrol division perform a variety of law enforcement and emergency response duties to protect life and property, and to enforce federal, state, and local laws.

Uniformed law enforcement officers are attempting contact with residents in the area of G-12. Area homeowners are asked to speak with officers to share any information, or follow up via phone if a contact card is left at your home.



🚨 MISSING PERSON – STEPHENSON, MI 🚨

The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents along west County Road G-12 (aka Co. Rd. 352) and adjacent roads to check their cameras and outbuildings for signs of missing person Brett Parrett.

Parrett, a male in his mid-30s, has not been heard from since 11 PM on Sunday, April 5th, when he indicated that he was walking along County Road G-12, west of Stephenson.

He was last seen wearing a Green Bay Packers jersey, Green Bay Packers knit cap, dark pants, and a gray backpack, as pictured.

🏆🐾 Shoutout to our prize-winning pair, Deputy Kyle Piatt and K9jace! 🐾🏆

Deputy Piatt and K9 Jace took second place in the building search event at yesterday’s Karl Zeitler Memorial Hunt & Law Dog Challenge, earning a $1,000 prize for the Menominee County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit!

Twenty-two K9 teams from three states joined in this year’s challenge to test their skills in narcotics detection, area searches, and apprehension.

We couldn’t be more proud of our hardworking K9 team!
