๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ CROSSWALK SAFETY: IT TAKES BOTH OF US

As students, employees, and visitors return to campus, UWSPPD wants to remind everyone about the importance of crosswalk safety, particularly along Broadway Street.
Crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers and pedestrians both have obligations under Wisconsin law.
๐ DRIVERS: YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS
Wisconsin Statute ยง 346.24(1) requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the roadway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk when traffic is not controlled by a signal or traffic officer.
โก๏ธ Slow down.
โก๏ธ Watch for pedestrians.
โก๏ธ Stop and yield when required.
โก๏ธ Never pass a vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian.
๐ถ PEDESTRIANS: USE CAUTION
Pedestrians also have a responsibility to use caution when entering a roadway.
Wisconsin Statute ยง 346.24(2) prohibits pedestrians from suddenly leaving a curb or other place of safety and entering the path of a vehicle that is so close that it would be difficult for the driver to yield.
โก๏ธ Look before entering the crosswalk.
โก๏ธ Pay attention to approaching traffic.
โก๏ธ Don't step or run into traffic when a vehicle cannot safely stop.
โก๏ธ Make eye contact with drivers when possible.
โ ๏ธ A FEW EXTRA SECONDS CAN SAVE A LIFE
A pedestrian struck by a vehicle can suffer life-changing injuries or worse. Whether you're behind the wheel or crossing the street, slow down, pay attention, and make safety your priority.
Drivers: Yield.
Pedestrians: Be alert.
Everyone: Share the road.
