Public Safety Reminder: Golf Cart & UTV Regulations
As we see more traffic around town, the Mentone Police Department wants to ensure everyone is operating their recreational vehicles safely and legally. Please take a moment to review the following guidelines regarding Town Ordinance 25-485.
Golf Cart Registration & Requirements
Residents may register their golf carts at any time at the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office. However, before a registration sticker is issued, your golf cart must meet all standards listed in Section 2 of the ordinance, including:
Operator Requirements: Drivers must be licensed or at least 16 years and 180 days old with a valid BMV State ID.
Safety Equipment: Must have a rear-view mirror and a functional slow-moving vehicle emblem (triangular).
Night Driving: Working headlights and taillights are mandatory if operating when lights are required.
Insurance: Proof of insurance must be kept on the cart at all times.
Rules of the Road: Operators must follow all state traffic laws. Golf carts are prohibited on state highways and recreational paths/trails.
Registration Fee: $25 Annual Fee (includes inspection).
Side-by-Sides & UTVs (Rangers, Mules, etc.)
A reminder for owners of side-by-sides, Rangers, Mules, and similar UTV-style vehicles: These must be brought to the Mentone Police Department for registration before they can be operated anywhere within town limits.

To maintain a peaceful community environment and ensure public safety, the following vehicles are not street legal and are prohibited from being operated on town streets:
Dirt bikes
Four-wheelers / ATVs

Similar off-road recreational vehicles
Let’s work together to keep our streets safe for everyone! If you have questions regarding inspections or specific requirements, please contact the department or visit the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office.
