Keep your green thumb in shape and get a jump start on your garden with winter sowing. This innovative outdoor seed starting technique has gained popularity among those seeking a simple yet effective way to boost their bounty.

Unlike traditional indoor seed starting, winter sowing takes advantage of the freeze-thaw cycle that seeds often require for germination.

Gardeners sow seeds in containers – typically recycled milk jugs or similar translucent containers – and place them outdoors during the winter months. The containers act as mini-greenhouses, providing protection from harsh weather while allowing sunlight to pe*****te and create a conducive microclimate for seed development.

It is cost-effective and environmentally friendly as it minimizes the need for artificial heat and light sources.

CELEBRATE SMART

As we approach the New Year, it is important to practice safety during our celebrations. Whether you're hosting or attending a party, or simply enjoying the festivities with loved ones, let's remember to make responsible choices.

Avoid drinking and driving by designating a sober driver or utilizing rideshare services. Be mindful of fireworks and follow local laws and proper handling instructions to prevent accidents. Keep an eye out for one another, ensuring everyone is staying hydrated and not overindulging in alcohol.

Traffic Safety Starts With You This Holiday Season.

We all look forward to gathering with family and friends over the next several weeks to enjoy the holidays, reminisce over old memories, as well as create new memories to share. Don’t let a tragedy that results from drunk or distracted driving become one of them.

The Mentor Police Department wants to remind drivers that traffic safety starts with you.

• Drive safely and observe the posted speed limit
• Be sure that you and all of your passengers are buckled up while driving
• Don’t text and drive
• If you are going to drink, make sure someone else is driving

Mentor Police will be on patrol keeping an eye out for unsafe driving. Do your part to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.
