Retirement isn't what it used to be. No body is sitting on the porch in a rocking chair. Research shows that as we live longer, we are healthier and more fulfilled if we have a plan for using our passion to make a difference. I will be speaking at the COSE BIG Summit on Sept 19th and I will be helping people map out their Third Act and embrace their elderhood with Life Mapping. Sojourner Truth, in the midst of the horrors of American Slavery makes this statement at a time when Black people faced daily terrorism from white slave owners and those who were committed to white supremacy. In the midst of this environment, she committed to the truth of her experience, the truth of her quest for freedom for herself and all Black people, the truth that Black people were human and should be treated as such. And armed with the truth, she chose to be safe in the midst of her enemies.
I must admit that I saved this quote for the end of the month because I struggled with where I fit into this statement and how it was related to black love. I mostly feel safe where ever I go because I made a choice not to live in fear. And yet the terror that I see and read about in the media inflicted on black men, women and children today be they in a police uniform in any city or a street mob in Wisconsin, or a family in the back of a pick up truck or the mob on the steps of the nation's capital, give me pause. These current events are not much different that those experienced by Sojourner Truth.
It is a revolutionary act to love ourselves and other black people. I proudly follow in the footsteps of my ancestors committing the revolutionary act of loving black people, seeing their humanity and their unconditional love no matter how it shows up. Ashe' to ancestor Sojourner Truth and all the freedom fighters that came before her and that came after her for a live well lived. And God bless the current freedom fighters moving among our midst.
I really got to know about Zora Neal Hurston when I did a show called "Zora is My Name" written and directed by Ruby Dee at Howard University in the 1980s. It was my honor to be on the crew. Zora's love for Black people, Black culture and herself is inspiring. I try to imagine being so clear and grounded that I would make a statement like this in such a matter of fact manner. This is self-confidence and self-love embodied. We can only hope that we all would be able to heal anything that gets in the way of our walking in the world with so much self-love. Ashe' to our ancestor Zora for a life well lived.
Lorraine Hansberry was one of the talented 10th. She was prolific in a very short timeframe before succumbing to cancer. She was fearless in telling her truths. Her plays were groundbreaking.
My prayer is that each of us is fearless and obsessive about doing what we are called to do in this life in such a way as to have no regrets. It's how I have lived my life and yet I have also played it safe at times out of my own fear of being too much, too powerful, too big, too bold i.e. risking criticism, distain, challenge.
These last few years have reminded me that life is short and we have limited time to do all that we can in this life. And as the world transforms rapidly in ways that we could not have imagine, it is time to do what we came to do in this life without holding back. Who knows what we might accomplish, create, or inspire. If you want to make a difference, if you want to make the world a better place, there is no time like the present to do just that. Become obsessed with your passion for justice, for equality, for truth, tempered only by love. Ashe' to Lorraine Hansberry for a life well lived.
As I lean more and more into my role as an elder, I resonate with this statement by Cicely Tyson. Every day I am asking what is needed now for me to fulfill my purpose and make a difference with the time I have left on this planet. Whether I am coaching leaders or working with nonprofit organizations, teaching at the Gestalt OSD Center or engaging with our Life Mapping members, it is all about supporting their vision and self-mastery so more people are making the world a better place. My inspiration comes from a deep place of unconditional love for humankind and a love for oppressed and indigenous people next door to me and around the world. So as we embrace Black History Month, what impact are you having on the people you interact with each day? Is it positive? How are you making a difference especially for those who experience oppression embedded in every aspect of society? How are you doing your best?
Make a goal that is tangible and close to home. Make a difference by educating yourself on internalized racial oppression, white privilege, white fragility and all the nuances of a racist society that are hidden and covered up. Do your inner work and find ways to truly love yourself and others. Use Black history month as a catalyst to truly "love your neighbor as yourself" but first love yourself.
In our Life Mapping community we are exploring the theme of self-love as a precursor to loving others. When we add Black History to the mix, we have the opportunity to move the healing process forward in ourselves and those closest to us.
Thank you Cicely Tyson for all of your work on the screen showing us the depth of Black love over the ages. Thank you for your work off screen to raise up Black people and the next generation of artists and activists. Ashe' to our ancestor, Cicely Tyson for a life well lived.
My first memory of a Black woman in politic was Shirley Chisholm when she ran for president. I remember watching her on TV in 1972. I was 11 years old and I remember being struck by her presence and her speech and somehow I knew this was an important day and I was proud. She was excellent and she looked like me. It made my mother's words ring true, "You can be anything you want" as she encouraged me to dream big. Ashe' to our ancestor Shirley Chisholm for making a way for generations of black women and men in public office.
The incomparable Nina Simone. What an amazing gift of artistry she gave us. What an example of creativity. What an amazing example of walking in your own uniqueness and following your spirit even when it is inconvenient or creates delays to your wants. I celebrate Nina Simone this for her spirit, her artistry and her uncompromising love for music and freedom. This ancestor was a true freedom fighter in the way she lived, the art she created, and the voice she brought to the world. Ashe' for a life well lived despite all the challenging obstacles that were thrown in her path.
Maya Angelou, one of the most powerful voices in America. Her beauty and her stature were awe inspiring. She was tall like me. I remember when I first read her poems. I thought I want to walk like that. I want to be amazing like that. I had no idea that I was already who she was describing --- A Black Woman. In our life mapping community we are focused this month on self-love. And there is no one who taught us more about self-love than Maya Angelou through her words, her song, her dance and her love for Black people. Ashe' to a life well lived, our ancestor Maya Angelou.
I was blessed to have known Ruby Dee and her husband, Ossie Davis. They did a show at Howard University and I was the assistant stage manager and later in my life when I was Administrative Director at Crossroads Theatre. I love the way they integrated their love for black people, their art, and their activism seamlessly into their everyday life. They were on the vanguard of the Black Arts Movement of the 60s and 70s although their work started decades before. They truly loved the Black Community who also sustained them when Hollywood did not. Ruby's marriage with Ossie was a great example of black love. So on this Valentine's day and during black history month, there is no better topic to explore for each of us than that of inner beauty and self-love. And no better example of Black love than this iconic couple. Ashe' in celebration of our ancestor Ruby Dee.
It has taken me a minute to think about my black history month posts. So here I am with this first tribute. What I love about Chadwich Boseman and this quote is that he was a true example of fearlessness. Not in a braggadocios way. Not in a careless fashion. He was truly spiritually grounded in reality yet moved in a focused way with love for himself and others. That love that Black people have for themselves and others is what I want to pay tribute to and celebrate this month. Ashe' to our ancestor Chadwich Boseman for a live well lived.
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

🅟🅔🅐🅡🅛 🅦🅔🅑🅘🅝🅐🅡: Heartfully Transforming our Inner and Outer Environment.
The United Nations designated 5th June as World Environment Day to preserve and enhance the environment for the well-being of people throughout the world. “ ”. Now what about the care for our inner environment? In light of the recent events in the US related to racial discrimination, which clearly highlights that the real pandemic is within us, embedded as seeds of intolerance and non acceptance in the deep recesses of our minds and perpetually fed by our prejudice and hatred. How can we possibly protect our outer, when there is chaos within us? How can we save ourselves from the dangers of the constant inner turbulence of judgments, likes and dislikes, and our emotional baggage that accumulates all the time, as well as saving our external environment?
