It's been nearly 5 years since our "Comfort 54" Lavender Fire Engine was introduced. It is mechanically on its last leg and may be leaving us soon. We thought it would be nice for us to share this article that was written about it by a local student.

December is a popular month for fires caused by Candles and most involve seasonal holiday decorations. Here are some safety tips for everyone to follow this winter.
- Choose to burn candles that have their own metal or glass container.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Keep candles at least 12" away from other combustibles.
- Opt to use electronic LED style candles for ambiance.
- If the actual scent is what you appreciate, try using candle warmers in stead of actually lighting them.

We've all heard that it takes a special kind of person to be a firefighter. It's true. This job is not for everyone. We certainly have to be physically and mentally fit to handle all sorts of situations that we find ourselves in while serving our residents. But one of the most important traits, that in all honesty, is becoming harder to come by in society these days, is compassion. The desire and willingness to help others in their time of need. Well for those of you who may not know them, let us introduce to you Firefighter Dominic Vivolo and Lieutenant Mike Smith. These two have been selfishly running the Mentor Fire Departments " RESCUE THE NEEDY" food drive for the past 29 years! They started it the year after they were hired and have not stopped! They set an example to the entire department and encourage new and old members to volunteer their time every year in order to bring help to those less fortunate during the holiday season. This food drive has provided the opportunity for you, the residents and visitors of Mentor, to give over $175,000 worth of donations over the past 29 years! Thank you Dominic and Mike for organizing this every year and we thank YOU, our readers, for making this possible and making this one of the greatest communities around!
All proceeds go to the Lake County Salvation Army. This years food drive is being held This Friday Dec 8th from 4-8pm and Saturday Dec 9th from 10am-2pm. We are accepting cash, loose change, and non-perishable items. We collect at the Main north entrance of the Great Lakes Mall parking lot near Barnes and Noble. You don't even need to get out of your car! Happy holidays, safe travels, and see you there!

Daylight Savings time ends on Sunday, November 5th. We like to use this as a reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. It's a cheap price to pay for something that may potentially save your life! Spread the word! Also, a reminder that we are more than happy to assist those who may be physically unable to do so. Just call 440-974-5769 for assistance!

Tis the Season! We would like to take this time to remind our residents that the burning of leaves and other yard waste material in the city of Mentor is prohibited! Despite what you may have heard, having a package of hot dogs nearby does not make it a recreational fire. Leaf and yard waste collection will run through the 2nd week in December. Click the link below for a list of other options for disposal. DO NOT BURN YARD WASTE! Happy Fall Ya'll!

Today marks the beginning of National School Bus Safety Week. While our elected officials and engineers research ways to increase safety inside the bus, let's do our part to keep our children safe while on the road. We all dread getting stuck behind one during our commute, but remember it's for good reason! When in doubt STOP!

We’ve all heard some version of these stories, right? On how our parents or grandparents had to walk for miles to school, uphill, in a blizzard, both ways? Of course, we don’t advocate children walking for miles in extreme conditions, but a little exercise each day doesn’t hurt. . Today some the Fire Departments Super Hero’s joined students from some of Mentors elementary schools for “National Walk to school day” to promote healthy life style!
