This week’s featured poster contest winner is Sawyer Hinz from Saint Mary of the Assumption School!

Sawyer was selected as the school winner for Saint Mary of the Assumption School and went on to earn 3rd place overall among our nine participating schools! 🎉

Sawyer's poster shares a simple but important reminder: “Buckle Up, Don’t Try Your Luck!”

When it comes to seat belt safety, there’s no reason to leave anything to chance. Buckling up takes just a few seconds and is one of the simplest things you can do to help protect yourself every time you get in a vehicle — whether you’re traveling across town or just down the street.

Great job, Sawyer, on creating a memorable message and helping us remind everyone to buckle up on every trip, every time! 👏🚔

Homecoming week is here at Lake Catholic! 🎉🚗

On Monday, members of the Lake County Safe Communities Coalition visited Lake Catholic High School to talk with students about making safe choices behind the wheel as they get ready for this weekend’s Homecoming festivities.

Celebrations are more fun when everyone makes it home safely! Students were reminded to buckle up every ride, keep their phones down while driving, never drive impaired, and make a plan for a safe ride home before the night begins.

Thank you to Lake Catholic High School for welcoming us and helping reinforce these important reminders.

Have a fun and memorable Homecoming weekend — and most importantly, make it a safe one!

The moment you step out of your vehicle, you become a pedestrian. 🚶‍➡️
For October's National Pedestrian Safety Month, we're reminding everyone that safety is a 2-way street:
👁️ Drivers: Scan crosswalks and stay focused — put the phone away.
👟 Pedestrians: Stay visible, use crosswalks and look both ways before stepping off the curb

This past Friday, the Lake County Safe Communities Coalition gathered at Mentor High School ahead of Saturday’s Homecoming festivities to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving.

With a busy weekend of celebrations ahead, it was a great opportunity to remind students that making memories also means making safe choices — buckle up, put the phone down, never drive impaired, and always have a plan for a safe ride home.

Thank you to Mentor High School and everyone who helped us share this important message with students. Safe driving isn’t just important during Homecoming weekend — it matters every time you get behind the wheel.

👮‍♂️ CAREERS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT 👮‍♀️

On Thursday, members of the Mentor Police Department attended the Criminal Justice Career Fair at Kent State University!

It was a great opportunity to meet students interested in careers in criminal justice and law enforcement, answer questions about the profession, and share what it’s like to serve as a member of the Mentor Police Department.

Career fairs like this give us the chance to connect with the next generation of law enforcement professionals and hopefully inspire a few future officers along the way!

Thank you to Kent State for having us!

We had a blast visiting Mentor Co-op Preschool! Officer Dan spent some time talking with the kids about safety, when to call 911, and some of the many things police officers do each day to help keep our community safe.

He also shared a very important message with them: police officers are their friends and are safe people they can go to when they need help. Officer Dan even demonstrated how the handcuffs don’t fit their little wrists and reassured the kids that they aren’t going to jail!

That brings an important reminder for parents and caregivers, too. Please try not to joke with young children that you’re going to “call the police” or that an officer will take them away if they misbehave. We never want a child to be afraid of a police officer when they are lost, scared, or need help. We want them to recognize an officer as a safe friend they can turn to.

Of course, no police visit would be complete without checking out a police cruiser! The kids got to climb inside and see what an officer’s “office on wheels” looks like. And the highlight? Hearing all the different — and VERY LOUD — sirens!

What a GREAT group of kids! Thank you to Mentor Co-op Preschool for having us. We loved spending time with you!

This week’s featured Third Grade Seatbelt Poster Contest winner is Hazel Meyer from Bellflower Elementary School!

Hazel’s colorful poster reminds everyone to “Be Smart—Buckle!” She also shares several important safety tips: children should ride in the back seat, use a booster seat until the seatbelt fits properly—typically when they reach 4 feet 9 inches tall—and remember that the car doesn’t go until everyone is buckled!

Congratulations, Hazel, and thank you for using your creativity to help keep families safe on the road!

E-Bike Riders: Know the Rules!

As e-bikes continue to grow in popularity, the City of Mentor has taken additional steps to help keep riders, pedestrians, and motorists safe.

On September 15, 2026, Mentor City Council passed three new ordinances regarding e-bike use in the City of Mentor. These ordinances are now in effect and address passengers, audible warnings when passing pedestrians, and helmet requirements for all e-bike riders.

There are also several existing rules riders — and parents of young riders — should know before heading out.

Take a few minutes to review the information below, talk with your kids about safe and responsible e-bike use, and please share this post to help spread the word.

🚴 Enjoy the ride, follow the rules, and help us keep Mentor safe for everyone!

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Lieutenant Michael Fuduric was part of two hundred and sixty-five law enforcement officers that graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Lieutenant Fuduric heads the Detective Bureau and also commands our SWAT team. The 299th session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 44 states and the District of Columbia. The class also included 29 international members of law enforcement agencies from 28 countries, five military organizations, and four federal civilian organizations. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. FBI Director Kashyap P. Patel delivered remarks at the ceremony.

Congratulations to Lieutenant Fuduric on this accomplishment.
