Merced County Student Events

Merced County Student Events The Merced County Student Events Program gives students throughout the county access to a variety of extra curricular special event.

The Merced County Office of Education, led by County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve M. Tietjen, is proud of our countywide Student Events Program. County school districts and community organizations partner with MCOE to coordinate or sponsor about a dozen student events throughout the year. Our events are designed to encourage achievement among TK through 12th grade students. Thousands of stu

dents participate in events that range from a Children's Opera, Speech and Writing Festivals, to the Academic Pentathlon and Decathlon. Some of our local competition winners have the opportunity to compete in state championships, opening a whole new world of exciting possibilities for them. Special acknowledgement go to our volunteers, teachers and coaches for their commitment and encouragement to our children and for supporting the Merced County Office of Education's Student Events. Congratulations to the students from LBE that will be moving on to the Merced County Spelling Bee in November. As we get closer to the competition many schools will be holding their school bees to determine which students will represent them at the county bee.

LBE Tigers know how to S-P-E-L-L! Last night our students and guests were part of the LBE Oral Spell Off. Madison Marian took 1st place and Amiya Tullbane placed 2nd! They will be representing LBE at the County Competition on November 29th. Violet McCormack and Caden Hale placed third and fourth place and they will be serving as alternates if needed. Way to go!! We are so proud of all of our Tigers that participated.

We would also like to recognize and thank Linda Estep, Debbie Garcia, Megan Goin-Soares, Anthony Parreira, Rachel Rodriguez, and Ann Erreca for selflessly donating their time to serve as judges, word caller, and organizers. This event wouldn't have been possible without you all and for that we are G-R-A-T-E-F-U-L.

Lights On Afterschool, which is celebrated in thousands of communities across the nation, is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20 in Downtown Merced.

Each October, millions of Americans in thousands of communities across the nation celebrate expanded, after school learning programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

This family event will feature student performances, informational booths, games, prizes and a costume contest at 7 p.m.

Lights On will also highlight the importance of early education with a parade featuring some of our youngest students.

The Lights On Afterschool celebration will be held in conjunction with Merced County Local Child Care & Development Planning Council and will feature an early education parade.

The parade begins promptly at 6 p.m. with the formation area on the corner of K and Main Streets in front of the movie theater. Main Street between K and M Streets as well as Canal St to 18th Street will be closed to traffic starting at 1:30 p.m.

This is a walking parade, and while wagons and strollers are recommended for younger children, no motorized means of transportation will be permitted.

The parade will be held rain or shine.
