Still feeling the angst? Stuck in a silent scream?
Our silence on this page over the past week reflects our shock, anger, fear, disillusionment, and sorrow over the events of Tuesday, November 8.
Sixteen months ago, the founders of this group were inspired by a man with great integrity and human-centered values who presented us with a future to believe in. When it became obvious that Bernie Sanders would not win the Democratic nomination to be President of the United States, Mercer County for Bernie Sanders re-grouped, re-named ourselves, and re-dedicated ourselves to promoting progressive ideas and policies. As individuals, some of us volunteered for specific candidates who we felt most closely aligned with our values. Unfortunately, the election results were disheartening across the board.
On the positive side, we can claim several successes. First, we spread the gospel of Bernie to many Mercer Countians who were not familiar with him, especially in the early days, via community information gatherings and social media. We also built a solid network on social media and through our hosting of debate watch parties during the primaries.
Perhaps our greatest accomplishments occurred between April and July of this year. By dominating the Mercer County Democratic convention in April, we elected a large contingent of Bernie delegates to the state convention held in June. Between April and June, we trained and organized so well that the Mercer County delegates were instrumental in electing Bernie delegates to the National Committee from the WV 3rd Congressional District, as well as to the Electoral College. Most importantly, we and other Bernie delegates from around the state influenced the state Democratic platform and resolutions process to produce the most progressive platform in the nation. The fact that establishment Democrats on the state level did nothing to affirm or promote that platform does not negate its power or importance. We fully intend to hold all who call themselves Democrats to supporting that platform over the next four years, and we call on you to do the same.
As the Mercer County Progressive Alliance moves on to its next phase, we want to thank all of you who have liked and followed this page; supported us by word, coin, or action; and voted your conscience. You gave us hope when we felt we were a tiny band of liberals and democratic socialists afloat in a raging sea of conservatives and alt-right adherents. Instead, we discovered that we have more allies than we ever imagined. Even though we all may feel thoroughly discouraged at the moment, we can't let ourselves surrender to hopelessness. That's why the MCPA has plans for the future and hope that you will join with us as we seek to bring about not just change, but positive change.
