Dear Country Village Day School community,

We are deeply saddened to share that Scott McJannet, a longtime Country Village Trustee and supporter, passed away unexpectedly on Friday.

Scott and his family became part of the Country Village Day School community in 2012, when his two sons began attending the school. Even after they moved on to the Mercer Island School District, Scott continued to serve Country Village as a valued member of our Board of Trustees.

We will always be grateful for Scott’s humor, patience, and thoughtful approach. His years of service and dedication made a lasting difference to Country Village Day School, and he will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are with his wife, Judith, their sons, and their entire family during this very difficult time.

Kids will be out of school and what better way to celebrate, than with a sing-along and teddy bear picnic in the park! Bring a blanket, a favorite ftuffy, and of course LUNCH! I'll bring the music, the parachute and bubbles, and snowballs (!)
*If you're coming from the Eastside, get off at East Mercer Way and avoid the FIFA traffic. Rotary Park is right across the street from the Mercer Island Library. The library will be closed so there wil be plenty of parking!

The next World Cup match is coming up this Friday at noon, featuring a highly anticipated showdown as Team USA takes on Australia! While Monday's game went smoothly, with no major issues, this match is expected to bring significantly more traffic and region-wide congestion.

To avoid delays, fans are strongly advised to arrive early to secure a spot in parking lots around Mercer Island Station before they fill up. Biking to the station is also a great option, with multiple lockers available (bikes are not allowed on trains on World Cup match days). Mercer Island and Western Washington are under a National Weather Service Heat Advisory, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 80s and low 90s.

🏢 Need to cool off? The Mercer Island Community and Event Center (MICEC) will be open this Monday, June 15, as a cooling center until 7 p.m. Stop by to cool off in an air-conditioned space!

Stay safe and beat the heat:

🥤 Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

🏠 Stay in the shade: Avoid direct sun during peak hours; check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.

🚗 Look Before You Lock: Never leave children or pets in a parked car for any reason.

⏰ Shift Your Schedule: Reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or late evening.

⚠️ Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you or someone you know shows signs of severe heat illness, move to a cool area and call 911 immediately.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, one of the largest sporting events in the world, will descend on the region next month, when Seattle will host six matches between June 15 and July 6. Up to 750,000 fans are expected to visit the region during this period, which will likely create significant regional congestion. To help the community prepare, the City of Mercer Island has posted information about transportation, parking, construction impacts, and more: https://www.mercerisland.gov/emergency-management/page/world-cup-2026-information

Now is the time to plan ahead! Since the busiest periods will come during match days, it is advisable to schedule/reschedule medical or other appointments and work from home. Use transit to travel during peak periods; drivers should leave extra time to reach their destination. More information about impacts from the World Cup will be posted on social media leading up to and throughout the tournament.
