Honoring the women of Mercer Island’s emergency management volunteer program during Women’s History Month

Throughout the month of March and beyond, Mercer Island celebrates the dedicated and fearless women who volunteer with the emergency management team. These women help lead the community in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. They strengthen the community by not only preparing their families and neighbors for emergencies of all kinds, but they regularly train in disaster response, first aid, HAM radio, and other skills.

These photos represent a small portion of the Mercer Island emergency management volunteer corps. We are grateful for our team and their contributions to the Mercer Island community!

Emergency preparedness gut check - how full is your tank? ⛽

Fast break-field trip time: Pop out to your vehicle and check the gas gauge. Is it above or below half? 🚗

No judgement if it is under half, it happens to all of us. The goal is to get to the point where we are keeping our tanks at least half-full, all the time. Here's why:

• Power outages. Refueling options are limited during power outages.
• No-notice evacuation. If you need to evacuate, it is one less stop you have to make.
• Evacuation traffic. If you get stuck in traffic during your evacuation, you will be okay on a half tank for a while.
• Regular traffic turned major traffic incident. Traffic incidents happen any day. Accidents, jackknifed semis, road construction, hazmat spills can close the highway for 30, 60, 90 minutes or more. Being stuck in traffic will be frustrating, but with a half tank, it won't be as stressful.
• Emergencies. You never know when you need to make an unexpected trip to pick up a family member, to urgent care, or any number of situations.

Making emergency preparedness part of our everyday is key. Emergencies can happen any time – let’s all get in the habit of keeping our gas tanks half-full.

⭐Bonus⭐ Not only is keeping your tank above half a great emergency prep task, it also helps maintain your vehicle's fuel system efficiency, possibly extending the life of your fuel pump and other components.

Saturday marks 25 years since the Nisqually earthquake. Many of us remember exactly where we were when the earth shook that day. This time of year actually marks the anniversaries of two other earthquakes as well, the January 26, 1700 Cascadia megathrust earthquake and the 2011 Great Japan Earthquake and tsunami.

Whether it has been 15, 25, or 326 years, a magnitude 6.8, 9.0, or anything in-between, the time to prepare for an earthquake is now.

All Islanders should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 14 days following a major earthquake. This includes food, water, and supplies for the whole family (including pets).

➖ Make a plan
➖ Build a kit
➖ Gather supplies to be self-sufficient
➖ Get to know your neighbors

The US National Weather Service Seattle Washington has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for King County on Sunday from midnight through 9am. Very cold temperatures as low as 20 to 25 degrees are forecasted for the region. Here are a few cold weather preparedness reminders:

➖ Use caution while traveling outside.
➖ Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors.
➖ Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
➖ Ensure portable heaters are used correctly.

Prevent frozen pipes by:
✅ Insulating exposed pipes with pipe insulation or wrapping with towels.
✅ Keeping a slow drip to keep water moving.
✅ Opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks.

Locate and familiarize yourself with the main water shut-off valve in your home in case a pipe bursts. (This is a good thing to know for most emergencies.)

Stay warm and safe!

Expect windy conditions as a cold front moves into the region Tuesday. Mercer Island and other locations could see gusts up to 40 mph late morning to early afternoon.

Make sure to secure any loose outdoor decorations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Wednesday. Kids are on break and many folks will be traveling to events, finishing shopping, and visiting friends and family. Here are a few tips to prepare for and stay safe during wind storms:

What you should do BEFORE the storm:
✔️ Secure objects in your yard (decorations, trash cans, outdoor furniture, sports equipment, trampolines, etc.)
✔️ Charge cell phones and other battery powered equipment
✔️ Fill up gas vehicles and charge EVs
✔️ Prepare for power outages – have a plan for refrigerated medications or electricity-dependent medical devices
✔️ Have your emergency kit ready

What to do DURING the storm:
✔️ Use non-flame light sources if the power goes out
✔️ *Limit time outside* during windy periods, be aware of your surroundings (powerlines, trees, objects that might get picked up by the wind)
✔️ If you spot downed power lines, stay away and contact PSE. If they are arcing or pose a threat, call 911
✔️ Use extra caution when driving
✔️ When safe to do so, check on neighbors if the power goes out

What NOT to do:
🚫 Never approach downed power lines - if you spot downed power lines, stay away and contact PSE. If they are arcing or pose a threat, call 911
🚫 Don't use BBQs or other outside gas appliances indoors

Report new issues and track power outages on PSE's website: https://www.pse.com/en/outage/outage-map
