If an emergency occurs, or you need the assistance of the MI Fire Department or Police Department, dial 9-1-1 and report your emergency. The Mercer Island Fire Department (MIFD) serves the entire 13 square mile island, and the surrounding waters, using two stations. Additionally MIFD assists adjacent communities through mutual aid and automatic aid agreements; and those neighboring communities rec

iprocate with the same services. These agreements result in a seamless response, which means the closest unit(s) respond to minimize response times and provide higher quality services, thereby utilizing tax revenues efficiently.

Last July, the Mercer Island City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Eastside Fire & Rescue to provide fire and emergency medical services on Mercer Island beginning January 1, 2024. With the start of the new year behind us, Eastside Fire & Rescue is now Mercer Island’s provider of fire and emergency medical services.

Islanders are invited to two Fire Station Open Houses this month to commemorate this transition, where you can meet your firefighters, explore the stations, see equipment, and learn how fire services work:

➖ Open House Station 91 (Town Center) | January 10 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm
➖ Open House Station 92 (South End) | January 13 from 10:00am - noon.

Still have questions or want to know more? While this is an official transition for the City and fire personnel behind the scenes, Islanders can expect the same level of service and both Mercer Island Fire Stations will remain open and operational. Visit the City's Let’s Talk Page for background information and a detailed FAQ:

What's being proposed: The City Manager recommended to the City Council that the City explore the adoption of a regional fire services model - this is where a larger fire agency provides comprehensive fire services across multiple communities. In this scenario, Mercer

You may have heard sirens on the North End this afternoon as Mercer Island firefighters responded to an appliance fire at a home on the 3700 block of 79th Ave SE. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire, smoke and fire damage were minimal. There were no injuries to occupants, pets, or firefighters.

Thank you to Eastside Fire & Rescue, Bellevue, and Seattle for assisting.

Last month, our department worked with King County EMS to receive five new Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) for our crews. These lifesaving devices are critical in the event of a cardiac arrest and can make all the difference in a medical emergency. We appreciate King County EMS for this contribution (and at no cost to the department)!

⚠️ Heads up: there's a burn ban in effect. ⚠️

Starting today, Friday, September 9, the King County Fire Chiefs have issued a ‘Stage 2’ Fire Safety Burn Ban which prohibits recreational fires until further notice. This means all outdoor fires, including recreational campfires, cooking fires, and ceremonial fires, are prohibited due to critical fire weather.

Hot, dry, and windy temperatures have dramatically increased fire risks in our region. While all outdoor fires are banned, propane or natural-gas fired grills, fireplaces, fire tables, other gasfired appliances as well as charcoal grills may continue to be used. Islanders are urged to exercise caution when using these devices given the increased risk of fire.

Learn more about this ban and what's allowed on our website: https://www.mercerisland.gov/fire

Earlier this month, MIFD firefighters participated in a fundraising event sponsored by the King County Medic One Foundation along with Island residents Brian and Tracy Webster to help support first responder training. This event raised funds to cover the costs of the year long paramedic training program at Harborview Medical Center.

Our crews and paramedics from Bellevue (WA) Fire Department demonstrated “High Performance CPR” as part of the event, which raised over $25,000.

Special thanks to BC Stephan Mair, FF Scott Logsdon, and FF Larry Jorgensen for representing our department and helping reach this goal. Well done!

Earlier this afternoon, Mercer Island firefighters responded to a fully involved car fire within close proximity to a residence. Three units arrived and worked quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to the neighboring home. Both lanes of 90th Ave SE were shut down for approximately 20 minutes between the 3600 and 4000 blocks to allow for the fire to be extinguished safely - luckily, no one was hurt and all lanes of the road have reopened.

Mercer Island Fire Marshal Jeromy Hicks recently graduated from the Seattle Fire Department Executive Leadership Academy, a program of the University of Washington Foster School of Business. This program involves professional mentoring and coaching as well as training from business leaders, providing new expertise for the department.

All graduates are required to present a final project in front of a panel consisting of the region's Fire Chiefs and doctoral degree holders from UW. Fire Marshall Hicks celebrated his graduation with recognition from Interim Deputy Fire Chief Doug McDonald. Well done, FM Hicks!

Last weekend, our department participated in the Mercer Island Preschool Association's 54th annual Circus for a bit of community fun. Firefighters handed out helmets and gave tours of Engine 193 to excited kiddos (and parents alike). Thanks to all who stopped by!

As spring arrives and the sun returns, remember this: warm air doesn’t always mean warm water in lakes, streams or oceans. Cold water is dangerous - a plunge into the lake can cause dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate, and more.

Your Mercer Island Fire Dive Team has already responded to water related incidents as people begin to enjoy water activities this year. Please be safe, and wear your lifejackets!

We are proud to participate once again in the Future Women in EMS and Fire workshop. This free, two-day, hands-on experience showcases career pathways in the field. Female firefighters and public safety professionals from agencies throughout our region provide mentorship, training, and demonstrations to help share a realistic idea of what a career in EMS and/or Fire is all about in a safe and supportive environment.

If you or someone you know enjoys helping others and likes the idea of working as a team in a physical career path, this is a fantastic opportunity! Simply apply online to participate (but quick, applications for this workshop close on April 2):

This workshop is designed for women in King County, age 18 or older, who are interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medical Services or serving their community as a Firefighter or a paramedic. The workshop is free, and participants are selected through an application process. Complete the appl...
