What a summer at Fendrick Library! Unearth A Story brought the whole town to life—kids, teens, and adults dove into weaving, dulcimer lessons, Fossil Fest, volcanic science, reptiles, dinosaurs, magic, bugs, author visit and scavenger hunt. Every week was packed, every room was full, and every program kept families reading, exploring, and coming back for more.

And yes… we ended with a giant 6‑foot cake for America’s 250th—designed and built by our amazing kids!

Although summer programs ended, remember to make Library Visits Part of Your Fall Routine.

About the Film
Cornie is a moving documentary directed by former Mercersburg Academy faculty member Kristy Higby, chronicling the nearly century long life and reflections of Robert L. “Cornie” Watson, a lifelong African American resident of Mercersburg.
Born at the dawn of World War I and a veteran of World War II, Cornie served his country with honor—yet returned home to a nation that still treated him as a second class citizen. His youth in historic Mercersburg was shaped by segregation and institutional prejudice that narrowed his opportunities, but never diminished his dignity. Through perseverance, grace, and the unexpected kindness of a few who refused to shut him out, Cornie forged a quiet strength that challenged even the most entrenched racism.
The film also follows Lyndsey Dawkins, a private school student raised long after the Civil Rights era, as she emotionally retraces Cornie’s story—connecting his struggles to the freedoms she enjoys today. In her journey, a torch is passed. Viewers leave remembering Cornie, and thanking him.

Inspired by Fendrick Library’s Unearth A Story, Maddex and his mom cooked up a prehistoric plate of fun. Volcano mashed potatoes, lava gravy, veggie forests, and dino nuggets exploring their habitat. A roaring good dinner!

Dinosaurs Have Been Spotted in Mercersburg! This summer, Mercersburg has been taken over by dinosaurs of every shape and size. They are hiding in shop windows, tucked inside community buildings, and waiting to be discovered as part of Fendrick Library’s Unearth A Story Scavenger Hunt. A special thank you goes to Ray Frazier, Mercersburg’s State Farm agent, for sponsoring this brand new event.
Kids can pick up their official booklet at Fendrick Library, 20 North Main Street, then follow the clues to track down each dinosaur. Younger children get a coloring page for every dinosaur they find, while older participants unlock creative writing prompts inspired by their discoveries.
The scavenger hunt encourages families to unplug, explore their town together, and keep reading and writing skills sharp. Every dinosaur found earns an entry into a prize drawing in August—so the more you find, the better your chances.
Love history as much as dinosaurs? The Mercersburg Historical Society is offering Walking Tours on Mondays, July 13–August 3 at 6:30 p.m., starting at the library. School age kids can also join Unearth Mercersburg’s History on Wednesday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m.
