The State of Connecticut DEEP has issued a Red Flag Warning and a Fire Danger of Very High for the state in terms of forest fires. A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service when winds are sustained or gusting(above 25mph), humidity is below 30%, and there has been less then 1/4 inch of rain in the past 5 days. This leads to rapidly spreading fires.
Spring is can be a very busy time for forest/brush fires. With melting snowpack, little precipitation, and lack of foliage, fuels dry out quicker and can easily burn. Departments around the state have busy dealing with brush the past few days. These fires are time consuming, labor intensive, and can easily spread to structures.

Congratulations!

We’d like to congratulate the newest Deputy Chief in our department, Cristina Schoeck. Deputy Chief Schoeck is the first female chief officer in the history of the Meriden Fire Department. Her work ethic and dedication to the department have earned her this position. Cristina was previously assigned as a Lieutenant in the Training/Safety Officer role on Group 3. We wish her the best of luck in her new position!

She is seen here having her badge pinned on her by her husband, Captain Steve Schoeck.
