An organization that Chief Gutsfeld is a member of had one of its members email hacked. An email was sent to all members under a members name however it wasn't the member who sent the email. Fortunately another member saw this email and quickly advised all members that the email was a scam and to not reply and delete it.

Chief Gutsfeld knowing it was scam decided to play along with the imposter. He did this so that he can show first hand what scammers are capable of. We have seen it too many times people falling for these scams and being taken advantage of and end up being out money.

This is a classic scam involving the purchase of gift cards. Needless to say after Chief Gutsfeld's last email reply the scammer cut off all communications.

Chief Gutsfeld was subject to a potential scamming incident that he will be sharing with you. This case is something that hits close to home and will offer insight on to what to look for.

Today the Plainfield Police Department went to Plainfield Elementary School to hand out popsicles to the students before dismissal. This was to recognize their cooperation during our recent evacuation drill. Popsicles were provided by Emergency Management Director Stephanie Schell. The kids enjoyed the nice cold treat on this beautiful afternoon.

Now that the weather is warm the paving scammers will be out. Today they were in Plainfield.

Avoid Being the Victim of a Paving Scam
Crime Prevention Tip
A man knocks on your door and says he has extra asphalt and is willing to pave your driveway at a discounted price. The high-pressure approach is designed to confuse and intimidate you. You are not getting a deal, you are being scammed.

If you agree, here is what likely happens. Men and equipment suddenly appear and begin “working” on your driveway. At some point, the conman claims a mistake was made and you owe thousands more than the original price. He threatens that if you refuse to pay, the “work” will cease. You may be escorted to the bank, to withdraw money. When you realize the scam you try to cancel the check only to learn it was cashed within minutes of it being written.

Paving scams like this occur regularly in New Hampshire and increase during spring and summer. The perpetrators target senior citizens and are well known to police across the country. Criminal charges vary by state but are commonly filed.

Avoid victimization and consider the following suggestions:

Beware of unsolicited offers to do paving work. Do not let the solicitors inside your home. Calmly but firmly tell the solicitors you are not interested and tell them to leave your property. If they refuse your instructions call the police.
Educate yourself and your family. Search the internet for “paving scams.”
Ask to see proof of the solicitors’ insurance. Conmen rarely have worker’s compensation insurance and if one of them is injured at your home, the claim could be made against your homeowner’s insurance.
Call the police if they begin “working” without your consent for service.
Be a good neighbor. Paving scams target senior citizens.
Call the police if you have questions, or if unfamiliar people or companies appear at your door or in your neighborhood.

There are similar scams involving offers to perform tree work and chimney work. Usually the scam starts with “We were working down the street and saw that you need to have your tree (or chimney) worked on.”

This press release is intended as a public service announcement. It is a warning that joins numerous similar warnings that have appeared in newspapers, on television and been sent out by the AARP. Your vigilance will help police in their effort to keep New Hampshire safe and secure. When faced with one of these scammers remember, there is no such thing as extra asphalt or a good deal.

Last night the Plainfield Police Department attended the Estabrook Christian School Year-End Program. We got to see what the students did all year and the projects that they participated in. It was a very enjoyable event. It was great seeing the students and to share in their accomplishments over the school year. Sgt. DePietro and Chief Gutsfeld were thanked for the support they have provided throughout the school year.
