Monday morning at 6:43 AM, our Sprint Unit arrived on scene for what was dispatched as a medical call. A short time later, our Sprint Medic had to leave the scene and direct the arriving ambulance crew to stage away from the area due to a male on scene waving a firearm.
Why are we sharing this?
Because often EMS operates in dangerous and unpredictable situations. This incident could have turned tragic very quickly had our medic not remained alert and aware of the surroundings.
In reality, there was no medical emergency requiring EMS intervention — this was strictly a law enforcement matter. But many times EMS finds itself caught in the gap of the unknown, responding before all of the facts are clear.
During EMS Week, many people share the positive moments — and there are plenty of them. But this also sheds light on the seriousness of the job our crews face daily, often with little recognition and, at times, heavy criticism.
Our crews pour their hearts into this city, the community’s, and in to Lauderdale county. They willingly respond into uncertain situations to help others, no matter the circumstances.
We are proud of them. They are some of the very best in this profession.
