Today, we recognize and honor Juneteenth, a day that marks freedom, reflection, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom and justice are not just words from history, they are responsibilities we all share today.

For the Merkel Police Department, this day is also a reminder of our duty to serve every person in our community with fairness, dignity, respect, and accountability. Law enforcement must continue working to build trust, strengthen relationships, and ensure that every citizen feels heard, valued, and protected.

As a community, embracing Juneteenth means recognizing our shared history, learning from it, and moving forward together with purpose.

☀️🔥 Merkel friends — it’s HOT out there! 🔥☀️

The National Weather Service is reporting dangerous heat conditions, with temperatures and/or heat index values potentially reaching up to 115°F in Extreme Heat Warning areas.

Please take a few simple precautions before heading out:

💧 Drink plenty of water
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or indoors
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
🏃 Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat
👨‍👩‍👧 Check on kids, older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may need extra help

And don’t forget our furry friends! 🐾
Keep fresh water available, bring pets inside when possible, provide deep shade, and remember that hot pavement can burn paws quickly.

Before starting your day or leaving pets outside for long periods, check the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

⚠ ⚠ ⚠ FROM THE CITY WATER DEPARTMENT ⚠ ⚠ ⚠

🚨 PUBLIC NOTICE – WATER MAIN BREAK / CITYWIDE WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTION

The City of Merkel has been notified that a contractor working in Merkel bored through a 6-inch water main line on S. 6th Street between Ash Street and Yucca Street.

Merkel Public Works has shut off water service to the City while crews work to make the necessary repairs. Once repairs are complete, water service will be restored.

After water service is restored, the City of Merkel is expected to be under a Boil Water Notice, likely until Tuesday, pending required testing and clearance.

Residents should plan to boil water before consumption once service is restored and the notice is active. This includes water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, and preparing baby formula.

The City will provide updates as repairs progress and will notify the public when the Boil Water Notice is lifted.

It is with heavy hearts that the Merkel Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow Troopers of Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Sergio Romero.

Trooper Romero gave his life in the line of duty while faithfully serving the people of Texas. His courage, integrity, and selfless devotion to others reflect the very best of law enforcement service.

We ask our community to join us in keeping his wife, Francisca, his two young sons, and the entire DPS family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, Trooper. We have the watch from here.

This week’s edition is all about education and awareness.

A simple traffic citation can quickly turn into an arrest warrant if it is ignored. What may start as a small ticket can become a much bigger problem when you fail to respond or appear as required.

The Merkel Municipal Court’s goal is accountability and resolution — not simply “locking you up.” The Court wants to work with citizens who make reasonable efforts to communicate and resolve their citations.

✅ There are many ways to resolve a ticket
✅ The Court will work diligently with those who communicate
✅ Online payments, court procedures, and contact information are available online

The key is simple: COMMUNICATE.
Don’t ignore your citation — contact the Court before enforcement action begins.

Looking for a career in law enforcement, but not sure where to start? The Merkel Police Department is now accepting applications for our Police Cadet Program!

This is a great opportunity to begin your law enforcement career while earning pay and benefits as you work toward becoming a police officer.

✅ Cadet Pay: $20.21/hour while attending the academy
✅ Upon graduation and completion of the 12-week Police Training Officer Program: pay increases to $25.00/hour ($54,600 annually)

• TMRS Retirement — 8% at 2X match
• Paid medical and dental
• Paid sick leave
• Vacation accrual system starts immediately
• Vacation accrual: 80 hours Year 1, 120 hours Year 3, 160 hours Year 8

🚨 Talk About It Tuesday with Code Compliance & Enforcement Officer AJ 🚨

This week, we’re focusing on the summer grow season and the importance of maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary property for yourself, your neighbors, and our community.

As temperatures rise and vegetation grows quickly, it is important for property owners and occupants to stay on top of common nuisance conditions, including:

✅ Overgrown grass, weeds, and brush
✅ Standing or stagnant water
✅ Trash and garbage not properly contained
✅ Rubbish and debris visible from public areas
✅ Unsanitary conditions that may attract mosquitoes, rodents, vermin, or other pests

These standards are in place to help protect public health, neighborhood appearance, and community safety throughout the City of Merkel.

If a violation is identified, property owners are generally given time to correct the issue. However, failure to comply may result in further enforcement action, including abatement by the City and possible fines.
