Important Update for Merkel Residents:
The City of Merkel is making a change that we believe will bring benefits to both our community and our employees.
Beginning May 25th, the City Council has approved a trial period for a four day, ten hour work week. As part of this shift, City Hall will be closed on Fridays, while remaining open longer Monday through Thursday to better serve you.
Here’s what this means for our residents:
More Access During the Week City Hall will be open earlier at 7:00 am and stay open later till 5:00 pm Monday–Thursday, giving folks with traditional work schedules more flexibility to stop by before or after their own workday.
Improved Service & Efficiency:
A more focused four day schedule helps reduce interruptions, allowing staff to complete projects more efficiently and continue providing the high quality service our community expects.
Cost Savings for Taxpayers:
Fewer operating days can help reduce utility usage and other overhead costs, allowing us to stretch taxpayer dollars a little further without reducing services. As an organization we compete against private and public sector employers and we are not always able to compete on salary alone. This schedule helps us offer a benefit that adapts to the needs of the workforce at no cost to the tax payer.
A Stronger, More Supported Workforce:
This schedule gives our employees a better work life balance, which helps with retention, recruitment, and productivity. Happier, well rested employees are better able to serve the people of Merkel.
Other private and public entities including Merkel Independent School District and all the Taylor County Precinct Offices have made this change with positive results. The City of Merkel will collect customer feedback, monitor recruitment, retention, and staff productivity, and survey employees to determine whether this trial will be successful in the long term.
The trial period is expected to last for about three months; the City Council will receive an update and provide feedback about whether to continue the new schedule at their August 18th meeting.
We know any change brings questions, and we’re here to answer them. Our goal is to make this transition smooth, transparent, and beneficial for everyone who calls Merkel home.
Thank you for your continued support and for being part of what makes this community so special. If you have questions, feel free to call City Hall we are always glad to help.
