Construction is officially underway on the new Merrillville Fire Station 73 at 9189 Colorado St., a major investment in public safety for The Heart of the Region.
Fire Chief Ed Yerga said the $15 million project has been long needed, especially for residents in the southern portion of town. Currently, the nearest fire station is about 10 miles from Merrillville’s southeast border near County Line Road and 101st Avenue. Once Station 73 is complete, that distance will be cut in half.
“What a great project,” Yerga said.
Town Councilman Shawn Pettit said expanding fire protection in south Merrillville has been a longtime goal driven by community needs.
“It is a great day for Merrillville,” Pettit said.
Town Manager Michael Griffin praised Merrillville firefighters for the dangerous work they perform every day, adding that the new station will help crews continue providing exceptional service to the community.
Merrillville Fire Protection Territory Board Member Steve Minchuk noted the station will be built with 100% union labor and called the location ideal for serving residents.
“This is huge,” Minchuk said.
