Yesterday, Merrillville opened its doors and its heart to Captain Phil Hasier and the Bay to Brooklyn riders.

The Merrillville Fire Department is grateful to everyone who helped make their visit special. From those who assisted with the es**rt to the people who gathered at Station 71, shared food, offered a handshake, or simply cheered as the riders passed, every gesture reflected the strength of our community.

Captain Hasier and the riders are taking on an extraordinary challenge to preserve the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their journey reminds us that courage is not only found in the moment of service—it is also found in the commitment to remember, honor, and carry a message forward.
Captain Hasier, thank you for representing Merrillville with pride.

To the Bay to Brooklyn riders, thank you for allowing our department to stand with you for part of this meaningful journey.

Today, the Bay to Brooklyn riders are coming through Merrillville.

This afternoon, please watch for the riders traveling along 73rd Avenue with an es**rt from the Merrillville Fire Department. Our own Captain Phil Hasier is among the riders taking part in this cross-country memorial journey honoring the firefighters, first responders, military members, and families affected by the events of September 11.

If you are able, we invite you to come out along 73rd Avenue, wave, and show your appreciation as the riders pass through town. Your support will mean a great deal as they continue their journey toward Ground Zero and Brooklyn.

Drivers, please use extra caution this afternoon in the 73rd Avenue area. Expect a fire department es**rt and brief traffic delays as we work to move the riders safely through town.

Tomorrow afternoon, please help us welcome the Bay to Brooklyn riders to Merrillville.

As our community continues to recover from the recent storms, we hope everyone is safe and supported. On Saturday afternoon, the Bay to Brooklyn riders—including our own Captain Phil Hasier—will be traveling through town along 73rd Avenue with an es**rt from the Merrillville Fire Department.

This ride is about much more than the miles. Captain Hasier is participating in the Bay to Brooklyn Ride as part of a cross-country journey of remembrance honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters lost on September 11, 2001; those affected by post-9/11 illnesses; and the military service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He is proud to represent our department and our community as the riders travel toward Ground Zero and Brooklyn.

If you are able, please take a moment to wave, thank the riders, and show your support as they pass through on 73rd Avenue. Your encouragement will mean a great deal as they continue this important memorial journey.

Team Rubicon Is Staying a Few More Weeks — Join the Standby List Today

Merrillville, Team Rubicon will be staying in our community for a few more weeks to continue helping residents with storm-related debris cleanup.

Their available work spots are mostly filled, but there is still an opportunity to get on their standby list. If additional time becomes available or a scheduled spot opens up, Team Rubicon may be able to assist with your cleanup.

If you still need help, please contact Team Rubicon as soon as possible at (310) 466-0548 and ask to be added to the standby list.

Their assistance is free of charge. While placement on the standby list does not guarantee service, it is the best way to be considered if capacity becomes available.

Team Rubicon Is Back in Merrillville to Help After the Storm

Merrillville, after another severe storm moved through our area, Team Rubicon is back and ready to help our community with cleanup.

Their volunteers will be out assisting residents with storm-related yard and property cleanup. If your property was affected and you need help, please reach out as soon as possible.

To request assistance, call Team Rubicon at (310) 466-0548.

Team Rubicon’s assistance is provided free of charge. They will not ask you for payment. If their team needs to enter your property to help, they may ask you to complete a simple waiver that gives them permission to perform the cleanup work.

We are grateful to have Team Rubicon back in Merrillville supporting our residents during this difficult time. Please share this post so neighbors, friends, and family members who need help know where to turn.

Community Resource: Free Lunch Tomorrow

Recent storms have been difficult for many in our community, and we know some Merrillville residents are still without power. If you or someone you know could use a warm meal and a welcoming place to gather, please join Feeding the Flock tomorrow, Saturday, August 15.

Free lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 7898 Taft Street, Merrillville. All are welcome.

Storms can leave our community without power—but please do not let a generator create a second emergency.

Merrillville Fire Department crews have recently responded to several carbon monoxide (CO) calls where generator placement was a contributing concern. Many of these situations can be prevented.

Portable generators must never be operated in a garage, basement, shed, crawlspace, porch, carport, or any other enclosed or partially enclosed space. Opening a garage door or window does not make it safe. Place portable generators outside, at least 20 feet from your home, doors, windows, and vents—and make sure the exhaust is pointed away from the home.

Permanent generators also need careful placement. If your generator exhaust is directed toward the house, windows, doors, or vents, have a qualified professional review it and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Please check your home today:

•Test your CO alarms and smoke alarms; replace batteries if needed.

•Make sure CO alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

•If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

Many are using generators while power is out, but please use caution when generators are in use.
Generators produce massive amounts of carbon monoxide, which is colorless, odorless and it doesn’t warn you. Every year, people are killed by carbon monoxide poisoning days after a storm — not during it — because the danger felt like it had passed.

If your generator is running, these rules apply:
• Keep it at least 20 feet away from your home, with exhaust pointed away from windows and vents.
• Never run it in a garage, basement, or shed — even with the door open.
• Make sure your CO detectors are working — on every floor and outside sleeping areas.
• If your alarm sounds, or you feel dizzy, nauseous, or confused — get outside immediately and call 911.

Don’t assume you’re in the clear just because the storm passed. Stay safe until the power is fully restored.
