Construction is officially underway on the new Merrillville Fire Station 73 at 9189 Colorado St., a major investment in public safety for The Heart of the Region.
Fire Chief Ed Yerga said the $15 million project has been long needed, especially for residents in the southern portion of town. Currently, the nearest fire station is about 10 miles from Merrillville’s southeast border near County Line Road and 101st Avenue. Once Station 73 is complete, that distance will be cut in half.
“What a great project,” Yerga said.
Town Councilman Shawn Pettit said expanding fire protection in south Merrillville has been a longtime goal driven by community needs.
“It is a great day for Merrillville,” Pettit said.
Town Manager Michael Griffin praised Merrillville firefighters for the dangerous work they perform every day, adding that the new station will help crews continue providing exceptional service to the community.
Merrillville Fire Protection Territory Board Member Steve Minchuk noted the station will be built with 100% union labor and called the location ideal for serving residents.
“This is huge,” Minchuk said.

Big things are starting to take shape over on Colorado Street!

Our crew stopped by 9189 Colorado St. to check out the progress on the future home of your new Fire Station 73. It’s great to see the land clearing and site preparation moving along so quickly.

This new station is a major step forward for our department and our town. We’re excited to watch it grow from the ground up, and we’re grateful for the continued support of our Merrillville neighbors as we work to keep our community safe.

We’ll keep sharing updates as the project moves into the next phase. Thanks for following along with us!

Stay safe, Merrillville.

The Merrillville Fire Department proudly marked a major milestone on Wednesday, celebrating a significant investment in public safety with an open house at the newly remodeled Station 74 on 57th Avenue.
This $2.1 million renovation enhances fire protection and emergency response across the northern half of Merrillville by giving our firefighters the space and resources needed to respond quickly and effectively when it matters most.
Construction of a new fire station along Colorado Street is set to begin next week, continuing our efforts to strengthen coverage and improve service for residents across the community.
These projects reflect Merrillville’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding property and building a stronger future in The Heart of the Region.

Smoke alarms save lives, and it’s imperative that all homes have functioning smoke alarms installed.
That’s why the Merrillville Fire Department partners with the American Red Cross to help keep residents safe by offering free smoke alarms and fire safety education to Merrillville households.
