Heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS are extended to the 2026 Brevard Veterans Memorial Center (BVMC) scholarship recipients!! Each August, the BVMC awards scholarships to assist with expenses of students heading off to college. In order to apply, the student must be a veteran or an immediate family member of a Brevard County veteran, as well as Brevard County resident. In 2026, the BVMC awarded more than $18,500.00 in scholarships to the following students: Sean Brodigan, Jolie Johnson, Sabrina Bree, Hardee Fuller, Michael Carlin, Brandt McLallen, Grace McKinley, and Ashley Galus!!

Congratulations to all! And thank you to the BVMC for having this admirable program and to Roger Scruggs for his expert photography! We wish you all the best!

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the event, “Grilling for Heroes,” at One Senior Place - Brevard/Space Coast, Florida in Viera. This day of appreciation was designed to extend gratitude and sincere thanks to our first responders, nurses, and educators, both past and present. The event, which was completely free for attendees, featured amazing food, children’s activities, cooling stations, and numerous vendors. It was truly a successful event for an admirable cause! Thank you!

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Florida (Official) July 4 parade never disappoints, and this year’s event was no exception! The excitement and feeling of patriotism surrounding America’s 250th Birthday was palpable! Parade attendees packed Courtenay Parkway from Merritt Island High School all the way to Merritt Avenue, where the parade culminated at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School. Participants from the business community, civic organizations, and of course BCSO, had apparently received a memo instructing them to outdo each other, as each float was decorated in incredibly patriotic fashion!

Immediately following the parade, the crowd gathered at the Amphitheatre at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center and Park for more activities, including a ceremony, food trucks, and displays.

We're already looking forward to 2027!

Throughout Memorial Day weekend, I had the privilege of being able to attend numerous veterans events at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center (BVMC) Park and Amphitheatre.

On Friday, May 22, Rolling Thunder Florida Chapter 1 started gearing up for a day-long rally on Saturday, which culminated in Rolling Thunder's ###VIII Annual Ride for Freedom on Sunday, May 24. The Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom is a yearly motorcycle rally that advocates for the return of Prisoners of War (POWs) and Missing in Action (MIA) service members. Riders gathered in Merritt Island from numerous states, including Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, to name just a few.

On Monday, May 25, the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center conducted its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the BVMC Plaza.

The weekend's events served as a solemn reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day, which is to honor and to mourn all of the military personnel that have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Never forget.
