Mesilla Fire is happy to announce the beginning of our home smoke and CO alarm initiative. In partnership with Mesilla Park Ace Hardware, we are providing First Alert Combination smoke/CO alarms on a first-come, first-served basis. Rules are: must be a Town of Mesilla resident; the alarm must be used in that residence; the home does not have a working smoke alarm; the homeowner cannot afford to purchase one; and the homeowner agrees to sign up for Community Connect if they have not already done so (fire crews can help with this). Mesilla Fire can install this alarm for you, with the addition of a release of liability. These are modern units with a 10-year battery life, and supplies are limited. Come by the fire station to apply for one, or, if you're already a Community Connect user, sign up there. No matter where you live, make sure you have at least one working smoke detector, and your family has an escape plan.

The 2026 Recruit Academy starts June 6th, and runs through August 1st. Every Saturday/Sunday from 0900-1700.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license, High School diploma or equivalent, and pass a background check.

Congratulations are in order for our Fire Chief, Gregory Whited!

He has officially been elected to the Board of Directors for the IAAI, the International Association of Arson Investigators.

Thank you for all that you do, for our community and now the World, for Fire Investigation and your commitment to life safety.

The New Mexico Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (NMIAAI) proudly congratulates Director Greg Whited on his election to the IAAI Board of Directors.

With 33 years in the fire service, including 24 years as a fire investigator and 22 years as an instructor, Greg brings a depth of knowledge and experience that reflects true dedication to the profession. His background spans both public and private sectors, including service as a private fire investigator, accelerant detection canine handler, and certified law enforcement officer.

Greg has demonstrated a strong and ongoing dedication to NMIAAI, serving in multiple leadership roles within the New Mexico Chapter, including Past 1st Vice President, Current 2nd Vice President, and Past Board Chair of Training and Education since 2015. His work has helped expand training opportunities, strengthen chapter engagement, and support the growth of fire investigators across our state.

He has long been committed to advancing the fire investigation community through accessible training, mentorship, and leadership grounded in integrity and transparency. His continued service to IAAI at both the chapter and national levels—including contributions to training, awards, and strategic planning—demonstrates his passion for leaving the profession better than he found it.

We are proud to have Greg representing New Mexico at the national level, and we look forward to the impact he will continue to make across the fire investigation community.

It's "National Public Safety Telecommunications Week," and we want to thank our family from the other side of the radio, Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority. We appreciate you all for your hard work and calm voice when everything else is falling apart.

On behalf of everyone at the Mesilla Fire Department, we would like to share our deepest condolences and support for the family, friends, and community of Cliff-Gila Firefighter Brittany Hathaway, who passed away after an unexpected medical event while responding to a call.

Her work will leave an everlasting impact on the community she served, and her sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Thank you for your service and dedication to others, we will take it from here.
