Honoring America
DAY 24
Ellis Island & New Beginnings

Between 1892 and 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island in New York Harbor, arriving with hopes of building a better life in America. They came from countries all over the world, bringing their traditions, languages, recipes, skills, and dreams. Their courage, determination, and hard work helped shape the nation we know today.

Many families arrived with little more than a suitcase and a dream, yet they built communities, started businesses, farmed the land, served in our military, and passed down traditions that continue through generations.

* Where did your family originally come from?
* Do you know who was the first in your family to come to America?
* Have any family stories, traditions, recipes, or heirlooms been passed down through the generations?
* If your ancestors came through Ellis Island, what do you think they hoped their future would be?

Fun Fact:
An estimated 40% of Americans can trace at least one ancestor who entered the United States through Ellis Island.

Quote of the Day:
“Every family has a story. Every journey helped build America.”

DAY 23: Classic Cars

America’s love affair with automobiles helped define an era. From shiny chrome bumpers and colorful tailfins to convertibles cruising down Main Street, classic cars represented freedom, style, and adventure. Families piled into station wagons for summer road trips, teenagers spent weekends cruising with friends, and car shows became community events.

Fun Facts:
• The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most iconic classic cars ever made.
• Tailfins became popular in the 1950s and were inspired by jet airplanes.
• Drive-in restaurants and drive-in movie theaters grew in popularity alongside America’s car culture.
• The Ford Mustang, introduced in 1964, became an instant sensation and sold over 400,000 cars in its first year.

Question:
What was your dream car growing up? Did you own a classic car, or is there one you still wish you had today?

DAY 22: County Fairs & Carnivals

Ferris wheels lighting up the night sky, the smell of fresh popcorn and funnel cakes, livestock shows, carnival games, and thrilling rides, county fairs and carnivals have been bringing communities together for generations. For many Americans, a trip to the fair was one of the most anticipated events of the year.

Fun Facts About County Fairs & Carnivals:
• The first official U.S. county fair is believed to have been held in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1811.
• The Ferris wheel debuted at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and quickly became a carnival favorite.
• County fairs were originally created to showcase farming techniques, livestock, and agricultural achievements.
• Many fairs still award blue ribbons for baking, gardening, quilting, photography, and livestock competitions.
• Funnel cakes trace their roots to Pennsylvania Dutch settlers and remain one of America’s most beloved fair treats.
• State and county fairs attract millions of visitors each year and continue to celebrate local traditions and community pride.

Let’s reminisce!
Did you enter a contest, show an animal, ride the Ferris wheel, or win a giant stuffed animal at a carnival game?

And the most important question of all…

What was your favorite fair food? Funnel cakes, corn dogs, cotton candy, caramel apples, elephant ears, roasted corn, or something else?

DAY 21: Friday Night Lights

There’s something special about a Friday night in America. The bright stadium lights, the sound of the marching band, the cheerleaders leading the crowd, and the excitement of the game all bring communities together. For generations, high school football games have been more than just sports, they’ve been a place to make memories, support local students, and show hometown pride.

Fun Fact: High school football became a beloved American tradition in the early 1900s and remains one of the most attended school activities across the country.

Let’s Reminisce:

* Did you attend school football games growing up?
* Were you in the band, on the field, or cheering from the stands?
* What was your favorite game-day snack?
* Do you remember a big rivalry game or homecoming celebration?

DAY 20 – America’s Farmers

America’s Farmers

Farmers helped feed generations and built the backbone of America. From family farms to large ranches, their hard work has provided food, jobs, and a way of life for communities across the nation.

Hard work built this country.

Fun Fact: American farmers produce enough food to feed millions of people here at home and around the world.

Did You Know? Early American families often grew their own vegetables, raised livestock, and relied on farming to survive.

Farmers work in every season, planting in the spring, caring for crops in the summer, harvesting in the fall, and preparing for the next year during the winter.

* Did you grow up on a farm or ranch?
* What crops or animals do you remember?
* Did your family have a garden?
* What was your favorite farm chore—or the one you liked the least?

For 250 years, American farmers have helped keep our nation strong, one harvest at a time.
