Here is a press release & photos for the 2026 Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association. 2026 was a record (pun intended) year for new records at 42. Both anglers landed new 1st place records. Please feel free to share!!

PRESS RELEASE FROM: LOWA FISH RECORDS COMMITTEE
TO: ALL OUTDOOR MEDIA
SUBJECT: ANNOUNCEMENT OF 2026 FISH OF THE YEAR WINNERS

Two well-deserving Louisiana anglers will be presented with the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association’s (LOWA) prestigious 2026 Fish of the Year Awards.

Annually LOWA honors the anglers voted by the LOWA Fish Records Committee to have had the most significant catch in the previous year in both Rod & Reel and Fly Fishing Divisions.

Winners for the 2026 LOWA Fish of Year are:

The top angler that will be recognized in the Rod & Reel Division is Cole Apeldorn
of Belle Chase, La. Lane will be presented this coveted award for his feat of landing a 272.25 Yellowfin Tuna caught at the East Lump in the Gulf of America, a new state record.

The top angler that will be recognized in the Fly Fishing Division is Gary W Peterson of Baton Rouge, La. Gary will be presented this coveted award for his feat of landing a 2.28 White Crappie at Poverty Point Reservoir. The fish is a new state record.

New State Fish Record!! Jeff Tomaloff (on right) was fishing in the Gulf of America out of Venice, La with a Madd Mantis Popper when he hooked up with a giant Yellowfin Tuna. Back at Cypress Cove Marina, the scales went way up to 256.12 lbs. Jeff submitted an application that was approved. the big fish qualified as a new state record according to Lyle Johnson, our State Fish records curator. Tomaloff hails from Vero Beach, Fla. Congrats for a new state record!!
