We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone supporting the Massac County Fire Protection District.

However, we need to highlight an important issue:

While we have been diligently tightening our budget, there are critical areas where cuts are not an option.

Forty years ago, the Fire Department required about $5,000 to fully equip a firefighter with necessary protective gear. Today, that cost has skyrocketed to approximately $20,000 per firefighter. This dramatic increase, compounded by the mandatory "two in, two out" policy, has significantly inflated our operational costs. For instance, a straightforward rescue operation now demands an investment of $80,000 solely for the firefighters involved, not including the essential tools needed for rescues.

Moreover, it's crucial to be aware that all equipment has expiration dates; after 15 years, it becomes obsolete. We must prioritize the safety and effectiveness of our fire dept and the community we serve. Your continued support is vital to our mission.

I don't often share posts like this, but it's about protecting a community we all hold dear because it's a part of Southern Illinois.

Fire safety remains one of the most essential pillars of public safety that we can still rely on. In a world where crime is rising, drugs are spreading, and law enforcement faces increasing restrictions to enforce general laws, fire safety has remained largely supported and untouched.

Here in Massac County, just outside Metropolis, our emergency fire services rely on the Massac County Fire—completely run by volunteers. These volunteers serve with dedication, but they face an ongoing challenge: their budgets simply don’t meet the needs of the communities they protect. Public safety departments across the country have long struggled with inadequate funding, relying on donations, unpredictable grants, and limited county budget increases.

This department urgently needs new equipment. The modest budget increase they’re requesting will make a significant difference, enabling them to replace outdated gear and maintain the equipment needed to keep protecting our families, homes, and businesses.

I urge you to vote in favor of this increase. Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of fire protection in so many areas. As a former assistant fire chief and firefighter in Bush, Illinois, I’ve seen firsthand how challenging it is to keep operations going with insufficient funding. I know how essential these services are, both from my personal experience and my education—I hold a Master’s Degree in Emergency Management/Anti-Terrorism, and I’ve lived in communities where volunteers were our only line of defense (Hurst, Illinois).

Paid firefighters are crucial, and they deserve our respect. But volunteer firefighters take on this enormous responsibility for no compensation, driven by a passion to protect others. Without them, our communities would be at far greater risk.

These brave individuals put their lives on the line for us, asking for nothing in return. The least we can do is ensure they have the resources to continue safeguarding us.

Please vote YES on November 5th to approve the budget increase for the Massac County Fire Protection District. Your support will help protect the community we all love. And don't forget to share this message!

Day two of Fire Prevention is in the books. Today, we visited Franklin and Jefferson to talk to the kids. Two key takeaways from our conversations with the children are:

1. Many children do not know their address. This is crucial because if something were to happen to you, would your child be able to call 911 to report the emergency? It's important to work with your children on knowing their address.

2. We have discovered that many children are unaware of the location of their designated meeting place outside the house in case of a fire. Often, families may not have the opportunity to gather inside the house during a fire. It is crucial for kids to be aware of the meeting place and for parents to know where their children will be. This helps prevent parents from re-entering a dangerous situation when their children are already outside. Even if you have already made a plan, it is important to review it with your children.

We also want to take the time to thank some of the Franklin Kids for the beautiful drawings they have made for us.

The Massac County Fire Protection District kicked off fire prevention week by visiting Unity and Brookport Schools. Throughout the week, the district is teaming up with Metropolis Fire, Brookport Fire, and Joppa Fire to visit each grade school and educate children on fire safety. During Fire Prevention Week, we discuss several crucial safety measures with the children:

1. Children should ensure that adults replace the batteries in their smoke detectors every 6 months.
2. We stress the importance of having a designated meeting place outside the home for the family in case of an emergency. If you don't have a meeting place, it's crucial to create one.
3. We also teach the kids practical fire safety measures, such as knowing two ways out of the house in case of a fire. The second way out can be a window or another door. If your children are on the second floor of a home, it is important to have an emergency ladder for them to use to climb out of the window. These measures are simple yet effective, empowering parents to keep their children safe.
As much as we can teach your children about fire safety, it's crucial that you continue the conversation at home. Discussing fire prevention and what to do in the event of an emergency is a responsibility we all share. Fire doesn't wait for anyone, so it's important to have these discussions before they're needed. By being proactive, you can help ensure your children's safety.
