We have some exciting news to share, Metropolis! 🎉🚒
The Metropolis Fire Department is proud to announce that we have been selected as a recipient of the FY26 Small Equipment Grant from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal!

This grant funding is an incredible win for our department and our community. We will be using these funds to purchase brand-new structural firefighting gear for our crew.

Turnout gear is a firefighter's first line of defense against extreme heat, smoke, and hazardous environments. Investing in this new gear directly enhances the safety of our team on the front lines, ensuring they have the highest level of protection possible when responding to emergency calls across the city. Best of all, this grant allows us to secure this vital equipment without impacting our local municipal budget.

A massive thank you to the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office for their continued support of local fire services and for investing in our mission to keep Metropolis safe!

Stay safe out there! 🧑‍🚒💪

Last night at just before 9pm we were requested to respond to the Ohio River to search for a kayaker that hadn't been seen since just before dark. While our firefighters were getting our boat hooked up, we requested assistance from McCracken County Rescue to assist us. While we were getting into the water, we also had Marshall Co Emergency Management Agency coming as well to broaden our search abilities. Notifications were made to the United States Coast Guard sector command in Louisville. Our crews searched along both the Illinois and Kentucky banks of the river covering miles of shoreline. Nearly 4 hours into the search, we were told that the female stated she was going to Kentucky and would be back tomorrow. The woman was later located walking near the Interstate 24 West bound off ramp just after 2am by a sheriff's deputy. The woman advised the deputy that she reached the shoreline and walked to Walmart to get some cupcakes and walked back to Illinois.
