Wildfire Community Preparedness Day – May 2, 2026
Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is coming up on Saturday, May 2. This national effort, led by the National Fire Protection Association, encourages individuals and communities to take simple steps to reduce wildfire risk.
With dry conditions and increased wildfire risk across Georgia, now is a good time to focus on protecting your home and property. Wildfires often spread through embers, not just flames, so preparation around your home is critical.
Start with these key steps:
• Keep the first 0–5 feet around your home free of anything flammable (mulch, leaves, pine straw)
• Clean debris from roofs, gutters, decks, and porches
• Trim trees and shrubs so they do not touch or overhang your home
• Screen vents and openings to help prevent embers from getting inside
• Move firewood, fuel, and other materials away from structures
These practices help create a Home Ignition Zone, which can greatly improve your home’s chances of withstanding a wildfire.
Preparedness Day projects can often be completed in just a few hours, but they can make a big difference in reducing risk for your home and community.

With worsening drought and spreading wildfires, our state, our communities, and our farmers are facing increasingly dangerous conditions that are taking a real toll on livelihoods and daily life.

We’re keeping everyone affected in our thoughts and praying for rain, relief, and protection—especially for the first responders and farmers working tirelessly on the front lines of these challenges.

In response to the wildfires across Georgia, I am extending the application deadline for Hurricane Helene Block Grant Program to May 11, 2026.

We would never put Georgia farmers in a situation where they would be forced to choose between responding to this current natural disaster or submitting their application for relief from last.

This morning Georgia Forestry Commission issued a 30-day mandatory burn ban for 91 Georgia counties currently being impacted by severe drought and wildfires.

I strongly encourage all Georgians to do the right thing and strictly adhere to the burn ban while these drought conditions persist.

Grateful to the entire team at GFC for their tireless effort to contain wildfires across the state.

We’re seeing the real impacts of prolonged drought across Georgia impacting 98% of our state and putting pressure on crops, livestock, and farm operations statewide. Our farmers are resilient, but they need rain, prayers, and relief soon. Our Georgia Department of Agriculture team is closely monitoring conditions and working with partners to support producers.
