🌀 Hurricane Season 2026 Begins Today 🌀
Today marks the official start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Forecasters are predicting a slightly below-average season this year, largely due to a strong El Niño pattern. Historically, El Niño years can reduce the overall number of tropical systems in the Atlantic Basin.
But let me say this loud and clear… it only takes one.
Hurricane Idalia impacted us during an El Niño year. Then in 2024, Hurricane Helene hit Candler County with a knockout punch unlike anything most of us have ever seen. Days without power, roads blocked all across the county, communications down, and recovery efforts that lasted for months. It was, without question, one of the worst storms to hit this area in generations.
But we made it through it together.
That storm reminded us that tropical weather is not just a coastal problem. Candler County absolutely can and will be impacted by hurricanes and tropical systems. Experience has taught us to take hurricane season seriously, no matter what the seasonal forecast says.
Here at Candler County EMA, preparations are already well underway. Planning, training, equipment checks, communications testing, EOC readiness, coordination with our public safety partners, and reviewing lessons learned from Helene have been ongoing for months now.
Now is the time for everyone else to start getting ready too.
Review your emergency plans.
Check your generators and supplies.
Make sure you have a way to receive emergency alerts.
Prepare now while the weather is calm.
We’ll continue to keep the public updated throughout the season as conditions warrant.
Stay prepared, Candler County.
